Warsaw has had no city party on 31 December since 2020, so the night belongs to Castle Square, a Chopin concert, a riverside programme and rockets fired by residents. This is how to plan New Year in Warsaw, from the evening to the morning after.
Anyone landing here for NYE with a main stage in mind will not find one. The city has staged no official countdown since 2020, and in October 2025 the press reported that once again there would be no municipal party. What exists is looser and more local. People walk to Castle Square or gather under the Palace of Culture and Science, and Poles call the night Sylwester, the local name for 31 December. Everything below describes the 2025/26 edition unless it says otherwise, because the 2026/27 programme had barely begun to appear when this was written.
Where Warsaw gathers at midnight: Castle Square and the Palace
- Castle Square (Plac Zamkowy) in the Old Town, with Sigismund's Column, the Royal Castle and the city Christmas tree, is where the crowd stood at midnight in 2025/26.
- The area around the Palace of Culture and Science, on Plac Defilad, drew people in 2023/24.
- Poniatówka, the beach under Poniatowski Bridge, hosted the riverside programme described further down.
- Hala Koszyki in Śródmieście held a free party in 2025/26.
When to arrive and what is free
There is no gate, no ticket and no city stage, so getting to the countdown simply means turning up. Castle Square fills under the tree towards midnight, and nobody publishes a headcount. The earlier part of the evening is gentler: the free Poniatówka programme ran from 4:00 pm (2025/26 edition). A workable plan is the river in the afternoon, a concert or dinner after dark and the square an hour or so before the countdown.
Do not wait for a programme that does not exist: be on Castle Square before midnight, free and without a gate, or take a seat at a Chopin concert a few steps away if crowds are not for you.
Getting around that night
Transport is the thinnest part of this guide, because no source confirms the metro hours for the night. A 24-hour ticket for zone 1 costs €3.45 and a 75-minute ticket €1.01. Read the ZTM timetable at wtp.waw.pl before the evening. For Castle Square the nearest stops are Ratusz Arsenał on line M1 or Świętokrzyska, for the Palace they are Centrum on M1 and Rotunda, and for Poniatówka you get off at Stadion Narodowy on M2 and finish on foot along Wybrzeże Szczecińskie.
Midnight, champagne and the rockets overhead
The old idea of Warsaw fireworks over the Palace is out of date: the city replaced fireworks with a laser show in 2018, cancelled the party in 2020 and has not brought it back.
The sky at midnight therefore belongs to residents, and in 2024/25 the city staged no fireworks either. The mayor, Trzaskowski, has urged people not to fire rockets because of animals, but it remains only an appeal, so in 2023/24 thousands of rockets went up and firefighters attended about a hundred incidents, mostly small fires.
At midnight in 2025/26 one rocket set the top of the Castle Square tree alight. A castle worker switched off the lights, the fire went out quickly, the tree was not destroyed and the police called the night calm, with nobody hurt.
A seat instead of a square
If a square in the cold holds no appeal, three halls sold seats for the evening. The nearest to the Old Town is the Chopin hall on Podwale, a few steps from the square itself.
- Chopin by candlelight at Sala Koncertowa Fryderyk, Podwale 15: four one-hour concerts ran at 4:00, 5:30, 7:15 and 9:00 pm (2025/26 edition), with a glass of sparkling wine in the interval. Times for 2026/27 had not been published.
- A gala at the Palace of Culture and Science, in Sala Starzyńskiego on the fourth floor, with arias and operetta duets: it ran at 7:00 and 9:15 pm (2025/26 edition), with tickets from €12.64.
- Filharmonia Narodowa lists a Sylwester concert for 31 Dec 2026 at 8:00 pm. See filharmonia.pl for the programme and tickets.
The quiet option by the river
The programme on the Poniatówka beach under Poniatowski Bridge was the calm alternative in 2025/26. The city ran it for free, with Vistula cruises, bonfires, a torch parade and a mobile sauna, and part of it needed a registration. Two seasons earlier the river had live music, light installations and hot tea in place of fireworks. The 2026/27 programme had not been announced, so treat this as a pattern more than a promise. It suits anyone who wants the river and a fire before the night turns loud.
1 January
New Year's Day is a public holiday, and under the Polish trading restriction law most shops stay shut, apart from exceptions such as pharmacies, bakeries and petrol stations. The law does not close shops on 31 December, which is a Thursday in 2026. Museums publish their own holiday hours, so read their websites before planning the morning. The viewing terrace of the Palace of Culture and Science costs €6.91, though its opening hours on the holiday are unknown.

Through a partner

Where to sleep
The Old Town puts Castle Square within walking distance, while Śródmieście is the base for the Palace. A hotel bed is quoted at €32–65 per person. The stays page for Warsaw compares districts in more detail.

Go to Castle Square for the countdown, keep a Chopin seat in reserve and do not count on a city fireworks show.
Check the same room on both sites: price and cancellation terms can differ.
