Where the Thessaloniki New Year's Eve party really happens, how to reach the waterfront and get home, what to do if it is packed, and what stays shut on 1 January.
Ask around and you will hear that Thessaloniki sees in the new year on Aristotelous Square. Older articles still say so, yet the municipality has held the main NYE party at the White Tower since the 2024/25 edition, and the official word settles it. Greeks spend the early part of the night at a family table and the streets wake up later, so the sensible plan is a late dinner, then the shore, then a walk home that you worked out before leaving.
The White Tower waterfront
The municipality ran its latest edition, 2025/26, as "New Year's Eve Thessaloniki / welcome 2026!" on the Nea Paralia seafront promenade, with the White Tower as the stage. Entry was open to the public, and none of the sources mention a ticket. Several stages carried DJs and bands, local stalls sold hot drinks and sweets, and the countdown took place beside the sea. In the last minutes of the year a laser ran from the top of the tower, and the tower itself lit up as the new year began. Thousands came in spite of the cold. Opening hours of that party: 2025: 8 pm to 3 am (the municipal listing gives a 10 pm start).
Locals call the night Protochronia, and the programme for the next one is published shortly before it, so dates and times for 2026/27 are not known yet. What the last edition offered: 2025: laser show from the top of the White Tower and fireworks over the bay. The music on the stages: 2025: DJs Fideles, Gheist, Ison, Momery, Kiki Botonaki and Dest (produced by NON reworks). Arrive before midnight, dress for a cold night beside the water, and stand anywhere along the shore, since the laser and the fireworks over the bay can be seen from the promenade and not only from the tower's feet.
Go to the White Tower waterfront and skip Aristotelous. That is where the municipality puts the countdown, the laser and the fireworks, and the way home deserves a plan before you leave the hotel.
Getting there and getting home
From the centre it is a walk, because Aristotelous Square opens onto the sea and the promenade lies straight ahead. For reference, a single bus ride costs €0.60, a metro ride €0.60, and a 24-hour pass €2.50. Timetables change on the holiday night, so treat the walk back as the default and the rest as a bonus.
If the shoreline is packed, there are three ways to keep the evening.
- Walk Aristotelous Square and the seafront before midnight, then pick a spot with the tower in view.
- Climb to Ano Poli, the old upper town, for a calmer night away from the stages.
- Book a table in advance and let the countdown happen indoors.
Check the same room on both sites: price and cancellation terms can differ.
Dinner and customs
A Greek NYE dinner starts late and restaurants fill up, so reserve a table. The Greek press calls the night a ρεβεγιόν (reveillon), and the festive sweets are melomakarona and kourabiedes.
The year itself has its own rituals. Gifts come from Saint Basil, Agios Vasilis, on New Year and not at Christmas, and the vasilopita cake holds a hidden coin that brings luck to whoever finds it. At midnight a pomegranate is smashed on the doorstep, and the first person to cross the threshold in the new year, the podariko, is said to bring good fortune. The kalanda carols belong to the same days, and the first card game of the year is played half in jest.
New Year's Day
The first of January is a public holiday, so most museums and shops are closed. The Archaeological Museum: closed 1 Jan and 25 Dec; shorter hours on 24 and 31 Dec. The Museum of Byzantine Culture: closed 1 Jan, 25 Dec, 26 Dec and 1 May. The day suits a slow walk along the waterfront and a bougatsa breakfast, and the White Tower has its own ticket, €8, for when you want to go inside.
From 2 January the city is back to normal. The Archaeological Museum becomes the morning plan, and day trips start from the same date: Vergina and Pella, Dion and Mount Olympus, or Meteora, which also runs as a day trip from Thessaloniki. A food tour on foot with tastings is the lighter choice.
A ticket with a chosen time slot, booked ahead.
An organised visit with a guide.
