A free light-and-water show on the main square, a hill with a view, a night-tram plan and a quiet 1 January: how to plan the turn of the year in Graz.
Graz gives you five chances to see its New Year show, and only the last one waits for midnight. That changes how the evening works. New Year in Graz is a free production of water, fire, lasers and light on the main square, held on 31 Dec 2026, and you can fit it around dinner instead of standing in the cold for hours. The sections below follow the night in order: where to stand, when to turn up, how to get home, the quiet alternative on the hill and what 1 January looks like.
Where the night happens
Everything centres on Hauptplatz, the main square, in front of the Rathaus (town hall). The Silvesterspektakel (Silvester is the German name for 31 December) is a show of video projections on a screen made of water, and it sums up the year that is ending. Steiermark Tourismus, the regional tourist board, calls it an ecological alternative to classic fireworks. Entry is free, so there is nothing to book. Two other squares have hosted the evening in earlier editions, though neither is confirmed for this one.
- Hauptplatz: the water-and-light show in front of the Rathaus, free.
- Franziskanerplatz: in the 2024 edition, a Hüttenparty (hut party) beside the Altgrazer Christkindlmarkt from 8 pm. No 2026/27 plan has been confirmed.
- Mariahilferplatz: in the 2024 edition, tent concerts on 31 December from 8 pm. The 2026/27 line-up is still open.
When to arrive and how long it runs
You do not need to wait for midnight, because the earlier blocks are the same show and only the last one falls on the turn of the year. Anyone searching for Graz fireworks will end up here: the show stands in for them, and each block is short enough to watch from the square without planning the whole evening around it. Pick the slot that suits your evening, then move on to dinner or a drink. Schedule: from 5:30 pm to 12:20 am, five 20-minute shows (5:30, 7:30, 9:00, 10:30 pm and midnight).
Light, water and lasers take the place of fireworks on Hauptplatz.
Getting home at night
The latest published plan comes from Verbundlinie, the regional transport operator, for the previous New Year: trams 11, 14, 16 and 17 until 1 am, then night lines hourly until morning (2025/26 edition). The centre is pedestrian, so the last stretch back from Hauptplatz is on foot whatever the timetable says. The plan for 2026/27 has not been published yet, and the current lines are listed at holding-graz.at/linien.
Schlossberg
Schlossberg is the hill above the old town, topped by the Uhrturm (Clock Tower) and with the whole city spread out below it. The Schlossbergbahn funicular carries you up, and in winter it runs from 1 October to 31 March Sunday to Thursday 10:00 to midnight, Friday and Saturday 10:00 to 2:00. 31 December 2026 falls on a Thursday, so the funicular runs until midnight that night. Fares: hour ticket €3.30, combined funicular and lift ticket €4.90. Entry to the Clock Tower itself is free, so the view from the top costs nothing extra.

- Hour ticket
- €3.30

1 January
Expect a slow day. 1 January is a public holiday in Austria and most shops are shut, so plan on a walk, a long lunch and a late start. For a bit of ceremony, Opera Graz held its New Year's concert on 1 January 2025 at 7:30 pm. A stroll back up Schlossberg is the easiest way to see the city in daylight after the night before.
Where to stay
Sleep in the old town and Hauptplatz is a walk away, which solves the question of getting home after the show. Book as soon as your dates are fixed, before you settle the rest of the plan.

If you dislike a crowd at midnight, take one of the two earlier blocks at 9:00 or 10:30 pm, which give you the same show. If you want quiet, go up Schlossberg before midnight and watch the lights of the city from there.
Check the same room on both sites: price and cancellation terms can differ.
Austria, in brief
What now
If this sounds like your trip, start here.

Graz
→A city whose clock has the big hand for the hours, and a blue museum across the river

Graz in 2 days
→The first day stays in the old town and on the Schlossberg, the second crosses the river to the Kunsthaus and rides the tram out to a palace that only runs until the end of October.

Day trips from Graz
→A clifftop fortress, a zoo with a castle and a cave near Semriach share the same ticket — one that only works on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, not every day.

Where to stay in Graz
→The old town keeps the sights within reach; Lend, across the river, keeps the lower price and the main station.

What Graz costs
→Dear in the room and the museums, cheap in getting about: the room is the biggest item, tickets are second.

What to eat in Graz
→Breaded half a chicken, a bacon spread and a rosé from a local grape, plus a fixed set lunch that few other cities on this site offer.

The best time to visit Graz
→In Graz the date does not just change the temperature — it changes whether Eggenberg Palace is even open, and whether the day-trip ticket is even valid.

Getting around Graz
→By S1 train from the airport, by tram from the main station, and through the old town without a ticket, because the tram there is free.

Austria
→A country where the train from a Vienna coffee house to a Tyrolean cable car takes just over four hours — so you choose the order, not the country
