The big free show is video mapping and fireworks at the Arc de Triomphe, behind a police perimeter and a ring of closed metro stations. This guide covers when to arrive, how to get home and where to go if the crowd is not for you.
New Year's Eve in Paris happens around the Arc de Triomphe, and whatever the postcards suggest, the Eiffel Tower has no fireworks that night. Locals call the evening the réveillon, and the 31 Dec 2025 edition is the latest one with a published programme. The programme for 2026/27 comes out later on paris.fr, so everything below describes that earlier night in the past tense and shows what a plan has to allow for.
The Champs-Élysées and the Arc de Triomphe
The Champs-Élysées was closed to traffic for the 31 Dec 2025 edition, and the City of Paris and France TV put on a show that was free and needed no booking. The video mapping on the Arc de Triomphe began at 23:50, the fireworks went off at midnight and the programme ended at 00:20. The theme was Paris, ville des arts et des idées, told in three tableaux about a city as studio, stage and book, with mapping by AV Extended and music by Ena Eno and André Manoukian.
- Access: the avenue was entered through marked points with security checks, and glass bottles, fireworks, sharp or blunt objects and alcohol were banned in the earlier edition.
- Cancelled in 2025/26: the concert and the ball, at the request of the police prefecture for security reasons. The concert had been recorded in November on the Place de la Concorde and was broadcast on France 2.
- On TV: France 2 carried the evening live, and in 2024/25 the broadcast was called La Grande Soirée du 31 de Paris.
- Cost: nothing, for the avenue and for the show.
When to arrive and how long you wait
Most of this night is waiting. In the earlier edition the avenue opened to the public from 19:00, and the programme filled the evening until the mapping. Arriving early still beats arriving late, since entry runs only through the marked points and the checks slow everything down. Earlier editions drew around a million onlookers and about 6,000 police and gendarmes. Connexion France advised leaving small children at home, because the crowd packs tight.
The spectacle is short next to the hours of waiting. If you want the Arc de Triomphe itself, come early and leave small children at the hotel. If you want a calmer night, book a boat or a dinner, or pick a district outside the perimeter.
The metro that night
Transport in Île-de-France was free on New Year's Eve night, airport lines excepted, and the window was this: from 17:00 on 31 Dec to 12:00 on 1 Jan. Only some lines ran all night, and not every station on them stayed open: 1, 2, 4, 6, 9 and 14. The stations around the Champs-Élysées, among them Concorde, Tuileries, Champs-Élysées-Clemenceau, George V and Franklin D. Roosevelt, closed from 16:00, and Étoile and Argentine closed at 2 pm. Trains passed through without stopping, so changing there was impossible and some people simply walked. A few stations reopened around 1 am. RER A and B ran normally, C, D and E ran all night with exceptions, and night buses followed the weekend timetable. Open the IDFM app on the day itself before you plan the way home.
Ways around the crowd
The Eiffel Tower is the obvious fallback and the weakest one. Its fireworks belong to 14 July, and on 31 December last entry in 2025 was at 18:45, with only the restaurants Madame Brasserie and Jules Verne open after that. A boat is the better answer. Bateaux Parisiens boarded at the foot of the tower, Vedettes du Pont-Neuf sold an hour on the water with champagne followed by dinner and jazz, and Bateaux Mouches and Paris Seine ran their own New Year's Eve dinner cruises. No prices or hours for 2026 are confirmed, and some offers were non-refundable, with the right to swap the vessel. For a different sort of night, Montmartre and the Sacré-Cœur sit on a hill away from the perimeter, though nothing published says what they look like at midnight. Parc de Belleville gives a view of the city with the Eiffel Tower in it, but not of the fireworks. Pick the dinner cruise if the evening matters more than the countdown, and Montmartre if you want to wander without a ticket.

What is open
The Louvre is closed on 1 January, which falls on a Friday this year. The day before is a Thursday, when the museum keeps its normal hours of 9 am to 6 pm with last entry an hour earlier, so 31 December is the day to see it. Opening hours for the Musée d'Orsay and everything else differ between sources, and each venue's own site the day before is the place to read them. The free transport from the night carries into the morning. After that an ordinary Seine sightseeing cruise is an easy way to spend the afternoon, if it runs. Nothing confirmed exists for a parade or a concert on the day, so leave that part of the plan empty.
A ticket with a chosen time slot, booked ahead.
Where to sleep
Sleep outside the zone of closed stations, which means away from the 1st and 8th arrondissements. A base on one of the all-night lines listed above cuts the walk home, and booking early matters because with every nearby station shut the way back is on foot.

New Year in Paris rewards a plan made before the day. Take the free show on the Champs-Élysées if you can accept the wait and the shut stations, and book a boat or a dinner if you would rather see the night than queue for it.
Check the same room on both sites: price and cancellation terms can differ.
