In brief

Lyon has no big stage on 31 December, but it has a light show on a hilltop basilica, a metro that ran all night and dinners with a programme.

Lyon spends its light in early December, so 31 December arrives without a big stage and without a countdown to organise your evening around. No city fireworks have been announced, and the programme for 2026/27 has not been published. What follows rests on the 2025/26 edition and is written in the past tense, so treat it as a pattern for the coming year rather than a promise.

No big stage, and no fireworks announced

The Lyon fireworks that people remember belong to 14 July, and nothing announced puts them on the Place Bellecour at the turn of the year. It is easy to assume the Fête des Lumières covers the holidays, but that festival takes place in early December and does not return on New Year's Eve. The French call the night of 31 December the réveillon, and in Lyon it is mostly a dinner affair. A short NYE walk through the centre is possible, but there is no stage to walk towards.

Fourvière, the last light show of the year

The only public evening was the projection on the walls of the basilica of Fourvière, the hill above Vieux Lyon. Its 2025 title was "La Région des Lumières", billed as the last chance to see it, with the listing reading 2025: 31 December, 18:45–21:45. The 2024 evening needed no ticket. The works change from year to year, so the name of this year's piece is not known yet. You reach the basilica by funicular or on foot, and a walking tour of Vieux Lyon at the foot of the hill fills the afternoon before.

An organised visit with a guide.

Getting around that night

  • Metro, run by TCL, the city network: in 2025: lines A, B, C and D ran all night (adapted frequency).
  • Night lines called Pleine Lune: in 2025: every 35 minutes between 0:45 and 5:00.
  • Funicular: in 2025/26: F2 ran until 5:00 on 1 January.
  • Park-and-ride lots stayed open, among them La Soie, Mermoz-Pinel and Vaise 1.

A dinner with a show instead of a crowd

Listings from 2024 and 2025/26 point to three places that sell the evening as a package. Le Grand Réfectoire sits in the Grand Hôtel-Dieu in the 2nd arrondissement. Cirque Imagine serves dinner under a baroque tent at Carré de Soie in Vaulx-en-Velin, and Ninkasi Cordeliers throws a masked party. Les Bateaux Lyonnais has sold a réveillon dinner cruise on the Saône in earlier offers, which is the answer if you want to see the city from the water. Reserve ahead.

New Year's Day

Most other lines went back to their usual timetable on 1 January, so the city is easy to cross on foot and by metro. A slow climb towards Fourvière suits the morning after. For lunch, a bouchon (a small traditional Lyon restaurant) or a food tour is the quickest way into the local table.
