A plan for 31 December and 1 January in Innsbruck: the city party, the fireworks above the Nordkette, how to get home, and what to do if there is no ticket for the Seegrube.
The big fireworks of Innsbruck do not go off above the Old Town. They are fired from the mountain, from the Seegrube on the Nordkette, and the city watches from below, which is the whole logic of NYE here: you either go up for the view or you stay down and look up. The Bergsilvester programme, as the city calls it, has published its days for 2026, while the hours and places are still to come.
What the city programme offers
The 2026 programme runs on 30 and 31 Dec 2026. Hours and places for 2026/27 are not out, so what follows comes from the 2025/26 edition and is told in the past tense. The party was held on the plateau in front of the Hofburg, with this schedule: 2025/26: from 9 pm, live band and DJ. The children's day was held in the Old Town and on the Hofburg forecourt, as a fair called Jahrmarkt der Fantasie: 2025/26: 30 Dec, 1–6 pm, Old Town and Hofburg forecourt. The Innsbrucker Silvesterlauf ran at this hour: 2025/26: from 4:15 pm. After midnight a clubbing night called Silvester Beats took over the Congress Innsbruck, in the Dogana.
Fireworks from above
The Nordkette evening on the Seegrube runs 31 Dec 2026 from 6:30 pm, about 2 h 30 min. It is the one plan that puts you above the fireworks instead of under them, and the number of tickets is limited, so book before you think about anything else. The cable cars leave from the lower station Altstadt, at Rennweg 3.
- Ticket: from €89, covering the ride up and down and a bar and igloo outside, without food.
- Gala: from €217, a gala menu with the ride included.
- Cable cars: the Hungerburgbahn runs every half hour, 7:45–11:15 pm and 12:45–2:45 am; the Seegrubenbahn runs on the same half-hour pattern: 8:00–11:30 pm and 12:30–2:30 am.
- Access to the Seegrube: from 8 pm, only with the NYE ticket (Freizeitticket Tirol not valid)

For a view of the fireworks without the crowd, the Seegrube is the only plan, and it has to be booked. Everyone without a ticket stays in the Old Town and looks up at the mountain.
When to arrive
The Old Town fills early on the last day of the year. In 2025 the Dixie Brass Tyrol played in front of the Goldenes Dachl from 11 am to 2 pm, and the light projections ran as follows: 2025/26: 30 Dec to 10 Jan, 5–10 pm. On the facades of the Hofburg, the Hofkirche, the Dom zu St. Jakob and the Stadtturm, and across the Marktplatz and the River Inn, the projections carried the motto Layers of Life. With a Seegrube ticket, be at the lower station well before the evening starts. Without one, the Old Town is your place, and the walk to the plateau in front of the Hofburg is short.
Getting home that night
Public transport was free in the 2025/26 edition, as it had been in 2023/24: 2025/26: 8 pm to 5 am, no ticket (IVB, regional buses, Nightliners and regional trains; not RJX, RJ, IR, WESTbahn, EC, ICE, D, NJ). On top of that, the night buses ran as follows: 2025/26: all five lines at least every 15 minutes, 23 vehicles instead of the usual 8. The rules for 2026/27 are not announced, so look at ivb.at nearer the date. Those who go up the mountain ride the cable cars back down after the fireworks, on the half-hour schedule above.
A seat and a concert
Without a Seegrube ticket, and with no wish for a crowd, there is a quieter evening to book: the New Year's Concert of the Tiroler Symphonieorchester, 1 Jan 2027 at 5 pm, Congress Innsbruck, Saal Tirol. The conductor is Gerrit Prießnitz, the soprano is Julia Grüter, and the programme is called Tänze und Träume. Tickets start at from €54.
1 January
New Year's Day belongs to the Christmas markets that are still open. The one on Maria-Theresien-Straße runs 25 Nov 2026 – 6 Jan 2027, and the panoramic market at Hungerburg runs 20 Nov 2026 – 6 Jan 2027.
Where to sleep
A bed in or near the Old Town puts the party within a short walk, and the lower station Altstadt of the Nordkette cable cars sits on Rennweg, in the same part of town.

Take the Seegrube if you can book it, and the Old Town and a concert seat if you cannot.
Check the same room on both sites: price and cancellation terms can differ.
Austria, in brief
What now
If this sounds like your trip, start here.

Innsbruck
→A Golden Roof in the old town, a wall of Alpine rock behind it, and Zaha Hadid's funicular climbing between the two

Innsbruck in 1 day
→The church at opening, the mountain before noon, the ski jump before last entry, and one card that pays for it.

Day trips from Innsbruck
→Hall in Tirol in 10 minutes, Swarovski in 30 minutes, South Tyrol in about 2 hours. Along the Inn and over the Brenner.

Where to stay in Innsbruck
→Innsbruck comes down to three areas: Altstadt is everything on foot, Wilten holds the main station, and Saggen is quiet, across the Inn.

What Innsbruck costs
→A day in Innsbruck runs from €48–70 in a hostel to €151–161 with a hotel and a second restaurant meal. The Nordkette is the single priciest line.

Innsbruck beyond its six main sights
→A zoo at 750 metres devoted only to Alpine species, a giant painting weighing 1,200 kilograms, and a park with no ticket.

What to eat in Innsbruck
→Gröstl and Käsespätzle are the everyday plate, cheese fondue is an evening dish that needs notice, and strudel closes the meal.

The best time to visit Innsbruck
→Innsbruck has two full seasons and, between them, weeks when the Nordkette stands still. Precisely the weeks nobody checks.

Getting around Innsbruck
→Innsbruck's airport sits inside the city, bus F reaches the centre in about 15–20 min, and the same IVB ticket covers the tram and the bus.

Mistakes everyone makes in Innsbruck
→Ambras is shut for all of November, Bergisel is closed on Tuesdays out of season, and cheese fondue is not served without notice.
