In brief

New Year's Eve in Sarajevo, edition by edition: where the public concert stood in 2025/26, when to arrive, how the city moved that night, what to do instead of the crowd and what 1 January looks like.

Sarajevo does not celebrate at the Eternal Flame every year, whatever older guides still say. In 2025/26 the central public concert moved to the plateau behind Sarajevo City Center, for the first time on that spot, and the reports about it mention stage effects but no fireworks. New Year in Sarajevo is a stage and a very large crowd, so this page tells the last edition in the past tense and treats the next venue as open until the city publishes it.

Where it happens

The plateau behind Sarajevo City Center

The City of Sarajevo organised the public countdown, with mayor Samir Avdić in the lead role and the company Prorent handling the technical side. The stage was 38 metres long and 12 high, the biggest so far according to Klix. Visitors went in through controlled gates, two from Vrbanja street and one from Kotromanića, and a separate zone for people with disabilities stood by the stage, entered across from the Swissotel. Divanhana opened, Dženan Lončarević followed, and Jelena Rozga came on before midnight: 23:43 (2025 edition). Police counted about 64,000 people, and the evening ended without incidents: 1:30 am (2025 edition).

Midnight and the fireworks

Anyone hoping for Sarajevo fireworks should read the record first. In December 2023 the city announced it would not organise a display and sent the money to animal protection, and the reports about the 2025/26 night talk about special effects on the stage. Just after midnight the stage played the song Dobitna kombinacija, and the mayor wished the crowd a happy new year. A ban on alcohol and pyrotechnics at the venue was announced only for the 2024/25 night, so treat it as last year's rule and not as a given.

When to arrive

The gates opened early in the evening: 17:30 (2025 edition). The first act, Divanhana, started at: 21:05 (2025 edition). The streets around the venue were closed to traffic from 20:35, and sources from 2025 advised arriving early and on foot, which suits closed streets.

Getting around that night

Because of where the 2025/26 concert stood, public transport was not suspended, and trams and trolleybuses were free until: until 4 Jan 2026. A year earlier, free city transport ran before and after the concert at the Eternal Flame, so the offer is decided annually and has no fixed form. Whether buses run all night and what the timetable is for 2026/27 has not been confirmed. On an ordinary day a single ticket costs €1.12 (2.20 KM) and a day ticket costs €3.63 (7.10 KM).

Alternatives to the crowd

  • The Sarajevo Philharmonic gives a New Year's concert in the National Theatre on 31 December, in the 2025 edition under its director Vedran Tuce. It was also broadcast live on Pozorišni trg Susan Sontag and at the venue itself, so it could be watched without a ticket. The start time: 19:30 (2025 edition).
  • After midnight, free concerts take over Trg Prve brigade policije, across from the Vijećnica, with Letu štuke, Petar Grašo and Van Gogh in the last edition. The dates in 2025/26: 1–3 Jan 2026.
  • The mountains around the city, Bjelašnica, Igman and Jahorina, have hotels with a festive dinner and live music.
  • Restaurants and clubs run their own programmes, and a table goes best when booked in advance.

Customs

Sarajevo's night is built around a stage and a table, not around one ritual. The city enters the year at the public concert, in restaurants and in clubs with their own programmes, and a two-day holiday follows, so a late start to 1 January belongs in the plan.

1 January

In the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, New Year is a holiday on two days: 1 and 2 Jan 2026. The Federation government allowed limited retail on 2 January, but nobody confirmed which shops opened on 1 January, so expect a quiet city and a slow day. A walk around Baščaršija and the Vijećnica needs no ticket. Further afield, the Tunnel of Hope, the Trebević cable car with the Olympic bobsled track and a day trip to Mostar all depend on winter timetables, so confirm with the operator whether they run on 1 January. The same goes for a walking tour or a siege tour.

Where to sleep

Sources from 2025 advised booking a room early for this night. The centre and Baščaršija keep a short walk between the hotel and the evening, and the guide to where to stay sorts the neighbourhoods.
