Skopje celebrates 31 December with a concert of Macedonian performers on Macedonia Square. This guide covers where to stand, when to arrive, how the fireworks question stands and what to do if the crowd is too much.
A capital without fireworks sounds like a capital without a party, and Skopje shows that the two do not go together. The 2025/26 edition was a concert on Macedonia Square, announced without fireworks by the mayor, Orce Đorđievski, after civic organisations asked for it. Locals call the night doček, and for them it is about a stage and a crowd more than about the sky. The programme for 2026/27 has not been published yet, so everything below follows the 2025/26 pattern in the past tense, and skopje.gov.mk is the page to see before the trip.
Macedonia Square
The main public celebration sits on Macedonia Square (Plostad Makedonija) and is organised by the City of Skopje. Start of the 2025/26 programme: 19:45 (2025 edition). Mile Kuzmanovski opened the evening, and Ognen Zdravkovski, Dina Jašari, Kuku Lele and Tamara Todevska followed, then Pajak, Lara and Dva Bona. The moment of the countdown itself went to Karolina Gočeva. The square also had a New Year bazaar, and its tree was lit on 15 Dec 2025, 6 pm.
Midnight and the fireworks
Anyone searching for Skopje fireworks on that night will find a concert instead of a show in the sky. In 2025/26 the city announced that there would be none, and the published running order for 31 December does not list any. Earlier editions did have them, which is why the cliché of a big bang over the square survives. For 2026/27 nothing has been announced either way, so the safe plan is a concert at midnight and a sky left alone.
When to arrive
The 2025/26 programme began in the evening, and the 2024/25 concert, Holiday Magic 2025, started at 7:30 pm. Coming early is advice rather than a rule: the places nearest the stage go first, and a long wait in winter air is easier with a plan for hot food before the music starts.
Getting around that night
The city transport operator, JSP, and skopjebus.mk publish the timetable, so read both before the evening. The square, the Stone Bridge and the Čaršija are all in the pedestrian zone, and a hotel in the centre solves the walk home. A ride on city transport costs €0.57 (card, app), and a taxi starts at €0.81 plus €0.49 per km.
Alternatives to the crowd
- Kisela Voda held its own celebration, Skopje New Year Story (Skopska novogodišna priča), in front of the Rasadnik hall in 2024/25, with a daytime programme and the countdown evening at 8 pm.
- Šuto Orizari staged a celebration with Roma music on its local square from noon until morning in 2024/25.
- Kafana Debar Maalo and the Woodstock Beer Bar in Debar Maalo are the places to look for live music. Evenings with a ticket exist too, with programmes that change from year to year, so book ahead.
- The Millennium Cross on Vodno is an option on foot, because the cable car has been closed since 21 April 2026, with a repair aimed at the end of November 2026 and no reopening date. The path from Srednje Vodno is 2.1 km and takes about 1 h up, the terrace is free and the cross is lit at night. Coming down in the dark calls for a torch, so a night descent is better skipped.
For one night like a local, take Macedonia Square and the concert of home-grown stars, without expecting fireworks. If crowds are the problem, choose the Kisela Voda celebration or a table in Debar Maalo.
Customs
North Macedonia marks the Old New Year, known as Vasilica, on 13 and 14 January, because the Orthodox calendar runs behind the civil one. For visitors this means a second chance for a party two weeks later.
1 January
New Year's Day is usually a public holiday in North Macedonia, as is Orthodox Christmas on 7 January, and in 2027 the first falls on a Friday. Most shops and institutions are usually closed, so see local listings before planning a museum. A walk through the Čaršija and over the Stone Bridge suits the quiet hours, and Matka and Vodno make a day trip for 2 or 3 January.
Where to sleep
The centre, with Macedonia Square, the Stone Bridge and the Čaršija, is ten to fifteen minutes away on foot, which settles the walk home after midnight. Staying close also makes the next day easier. The stays page for Skopje compares districts.

Go to Macedonia Square for the concert, forget the fireworks and keep a café table in Debar Maalo as plan B.
Check the same room on both sites: price and cancellation terms can differ.
North Macedonia, in brief
What now
If this sounds like your trip, start here.

Skopje
→An Ottoman bazaar, the Kale fortress and a centre rebuilt after the 1963 earthquake, all on the Vardar

Skopje in 3 days
→Day one the bazaar and Kale, day two the museums and Debar Maalo, day three Matka Canyon, and Monday shuts the museums.

Day trips from Skopje
→Matka by bus in half a day, Tetovo and Stobi with some planning, and Ohrid asks for a night, not a day trip.

Where to stay in Skopje
→The centre for a short stay, the bazaar for evenings, Debar Maalo for cafés, and hostels by the station for the cheapest bed.

What Skopje costs
→Skopje is cheap, and the bill grows on the airport taxi, organised tours and a beer in the centre.

Skopje off the usual route: Nerezi, Debar Maalo and the clock stuck at 5:17
→Frescoes at Nerezi, a district of kafanas and a station stopped by the earthquake: three places that rarely make the first round.

What to eat in Skopje
→Burek for breakfast, kebapi in the bazaar for lunch, tavče gravče with shopska salad at night, and rakija only after the meal.

The best time to visit Skopje
→Spring and early autumn for sightseeing, summer for mornings and evenings, and winter for museums, with smog you check each morning.

Getting around Skopje
→The centre and bazaar on foot, the city bus by card or app, from the airport by bus or taxi, and beyond the city by bus from the Transport Centre.

Mistakes everyone makes in Skopje
→The mistakes are a cable car you count on, a museum on Monday, winter without checking the air, SMS parking with a foreign SIM and a taxi without a price.

North Macedonia
→Skopje on the Vardar, Ohrid on a UNESCO lake and about three hours of road between them
