Day trips from Skopje

Matka by bus in half a day, Tetovo and Stobi with some planning, and Ohrid asks for a night, not a day trip.

Day trips from Skopje come down to three questions, and guidebooks rarely ask the right ones. For Matka the question is how you pay, for Tetovo whether the detour is worth it, and for Ohrid whether one day is enough, which it is not. The page starts with the nearest trip and ends with the one that does not fit into a day.

Matka

Canyon, boat and monastery

Matka lies 17 km southwest of the centre, and the cheapest way to reach it is city bus line 60 from the Transport Centre beside the railway station. The ride takes 45 to 60 minutes and the return fare is €1.14–1.62. At weekends the bus can stop 20 to 30 minutes' walk short of the canyon, so leave early and expect the last stretch on foot. Entry to the canyon itself is free.

A path runs beside the lake behind the dam on the Treska, built in the late 1930s, and ends at the monastery of St Andrew, founded around 1388 or 1389, where fragments of frescoes from the 14th and 15th centuries survive. The canyon holds ten caves between 20 and 176 m long. The best known is Vrelo, which sits on the New7Wonders list of 77 natural sites. Climbers have the rock from Easter to November, and anyone else can simply follow the water and let the walls close in on both sides.

The boat to Vrelo costs €8.11 and leaves once enough people have gathered, so a weekday morning shortens the wait. Whether entry to the cave is included is a question for the pier. Kayaks rent by the hour, and everything is paid in cash in denars, since cards are unreliable here. Take the bus and the boat rather than a private tour, because the tour saves time and nothing else. Go in the morning, when the day is still ahead of you and the light on the water is at its kindest.

Tetovo and the Painted Mosque

Tetovo lies about 43 km from Skopje, and the bus from the Transport Centre runs roughly every hour. The ride takes 40–60 min one way. The Painted Mosque is the reason to go. It dates from 1438 and was rebuilt in 1833 under Abdurrahman Pasha, and its outer walls are painted in colours and glaze said to have used more than 30,000 eggs.

Stay in the courtyard and dress as you would for any mosque. Behind the town rise Popova Šapka and the Šar Mountains, which can stretch the trip into a full day if you have one to spare. Without that extension Tetovo fits a half day, with time left for a slow lunch in the town and a walk back through its streets before the return bus.

Stobi and Kokino

Stobi is an ancient city near Gradsko, 35 km from Skopje, and it was the capital of the Roman province of Macedonia Salutaris. There is no bus to rely on, so go by car or taxi. The official page gives hours of 8 am to 4 pm with last entry at 3:30 pm, so arrive in the morning.

Kokino is a Bronze Age site at 1,010 to 1,030 m, and the label of observatory is an interpretation dating from 2002. It lies up to two hours away by car and has no public transport at all. Choose Stobi for half a day, and give Kokino a whole day or leave it for another trip.

Ohrid and across the border

Ohrid is about 170 km from Skopje, 3 to 3.5 hours one way, with nine direct buses a day, and the FlixBus takes 3 h 20, so a day trip would be spent mostly on the road. Plan one night there instead. Pristina and Prizren sit across the border in Kosovo, and the Prizren bus leaves at 4 pm and returns at 9 am the next day, which makes it an overnight stay. The ride takes about three hours each way.
