Mistakes everyone makes in Skopje
The mistakes are a cable car you count on, a museum on Monday, winter without checking the air, SMS parking with a foreign SIM and a taxi without a price.
- Cable car
- Closed since 21 April 2026
- Taxi
- From the airport €20–35
- Matka
- Cash in denars, boat €8.11

None of the mistakes visitors make in Skopje is random, because each one sits on a fact that guidebooks print in small type. Six of them come up again and again: a cable car that is not running, a Monday, the winter air, a parking number that rejects foreign SIM cards, a taxi without a price and a canyon without cash. Most cost an hour or a plan, and one costs a view. Each has a simple fix, and none needs more than a little preparation the evening before.
Counting on the cable car
The cable car to Vodno has been closed since 21 April 2026, and the city is aiming for the end of November 2026 for the overhaul, after which come tests and certification. Some tours still advertise the Millennium Cross as if the ride were running, so a plan built around it can collapse on the doorstep. Take bus 25 to Srednje Vodno instead and walk trail 2, which is 2.1 km and about an hour with a climb of roughly 490 m. Bring water, because the trail has no spring, and look up the cable car's status shortly before you travel.
A museum on Monday
The Archaeological Museum and the Mother Teresa Memorial House are both shut on Mondays, and the house also closes on public holidays. At the museum the last ticket is sold at 5 pm, so an afternoon arrival wastes the effort of getting there. Use Monday for the things that never close, which means the bazaar, Kale or the climb to the Cross, and keep Tuesday to Sunday for the museums.
Winter without checking the air
In winter the fine-particle readings in Skopje often run more than twelve times above the World Health Organization guideline, and the whole region counts among the most polluted in Europe. Heating with wood and waste is blamed. Look at the MojVozduh or AirCare apps in the morning and let the colours decide. On bad days choose museums and kafanas, and keep Matka and Vodno for the clear ones.
SMS parking with a foreign SIM
Parking in the centre is divided into zones from A0 to D, and from 1 October 2026 the zones A to C are charged on weekdays from 7 am to 9 pm and on Saturdays until 2 pm, while Sundays are free. Payment by text message goes to 144 144 and demands a Macedonian number, so a foreign SIM card gets you nowhere. A fine or a tow follows quickly. Pay with the QR code, the Parking.MK app or a scratch card, or leave the car altogether, because the centre is small enough to cross on foot.
A taxi without an agreed price
From the airport the usual fare is €20–35, and an official fixed price list from 2024 exists as well. In town the meter starts at €0.81 and adds €0.49 per kilometre, and a fare you did not agree on is a fare you will not argue about later. Uber is not present in Skopje. Agree the price or the meter before you get in, or order through Bolt or the Taxi Wizi app.
Matka without cash
Matka runs on denars in cash, and cards are unreliable at the kiosks and on the boats. The boat to the Vrelo cave costs €8.11, and at weekends the bus can stop 20 to 30 minutes' walk from the canyon. Arriving without small notes after a ride of up to an hour is the classic mistake. Carry coins and banknotes in denars, and start in the morning.
