South Africa rewards planning in the right order: visa rules depend on your passport, so check them first, then choose between the safari season and the Cape Town summer, which do not overlap. Everything else — costs and distances included — is easier than it looks.

Paperwork is the first thing to check, and to check early. EU, UK, US, Canadian and Australian passports enter visa-free for tourist stays of up to 90 days; other nationalities should apply well ahead, since there is no visa on arrival. From July 2026 every traveller, visa-free or not, also files an online arrival declaration before crossing the border.

The full list

All 277 places we write about sit on one page — narrow them down by continent, country, price or what you are travelling for.

The country is not done in one trip. Cape Town to Kruger is about 1,600 kilometres, which is a flight rather than a drive. The standard two-week route is the west — Cape Town, the winelands, the Cape peninsula — plus one flight north-east for a safari, with Johannesburg as the connection. With three weeks you add the Garden Route between them: 300 kilometres of coast from Mossel Bay to Storms River, driven in a hire car.

You drive on the left, and that is the one thing worth rehearsing. A car is close to unavoidable outside Cape Town: there is essentially no intercity public transport beyond long-distance coaches, and a safari means either your own car through Kruger or a guided vehicle from a private reserve. Kruger charges per person per day rather than per vehicle — €32 for a foreign visitor — and the gates take cards only.

What it's known for

Six things South Africa means

Three capitals, and the biggest city is none of them

The legislature sits in Cape Town, the executive in Pretoria, the judiciary in Bloemfontein. The split dates to 1910, when four colonies merged and none would give up everything. Johannesburg, the largest city in the country, is not a capital at all.

Eleven official languages, then a twelfth

The 1996 constitution recognised eleven; in 2023 South African Sign Language was added as the twelfth. English is the first language of slightly under a tenth of the population, but it is the language the state and business run in.

The first heart transplant happened here

Christiaan Barnard transplanted Louis Washkansky's heart at Groote Schuur hospital in Cape Town on 3 December 1967. The patient lived eighteen days. The theatre is a museum now, inside a building that is still a working hospital.

The country that gave up its nuclear weapons on its own

South Africa built six nuclear warheads by 1989, then dismantled all of them before the transition to democracy. It remains the only state that built its own arsenal and then removed it itself.

A floral kingdom the size of one cape

The Cape is one of the world's six floral kingdoms and by far the smallest — it fits into the corner of one country while the other five are measured in continents. Table Mountain alone carries more plant species than all of Britain.

The power went off on a timetable for almost two decades, then stopped

Load shedding is the local word for scheduled blackouts when the grid cannot meet demand; it ran almost continuously from 2007 until May 2025, when the country began its longest run without a cut since 2018 — over a year with none by September 2026. Hotels and restaurants still keep generators as backup, and the app with the switch-off schedule is still on people's phones, just in case.

What to see

Five places for a first visit

This isn't a ranking — it's a route. Any one of these could carry a whole trip.

The Cape of Good Hope
01

The Cape of Good Hope

Africa's south-westernmost point, ninety minutes from Cape Town through a reserve full of baboons and ostriches. The sign saying so is the most photographed plank in the country. The continent's actual southern tip is not here but at Cape Agulhas, 150 kilometres east — a mistake almost everyone makes.

Stellenbosch and the winelands
02

Stellenbosch and the winelands

Forty-five minutes from Cape Town, three valleys holding more than two hundred wineries. Tasting is cheaper here than anywhere in Europe, which is also why you go with a driver or on a tour. Franschhoek runs a wine tram between estates that solves the same problem.

The Drakensberg
03

The Drakensberg

A three-hundred-kilometre basalt wall along the Lesotho border. The Amphitheatre is five kilometres of thousand-metre cliff, and the Tugela falls over its lip — one of the highest waterfalls on earth. Walks run from one day to five; the altitude asks for a day of acclimatising.

The Garden Route
04

The Garden Route

Three hundred kilometres of coast between Mossel Bay and Storms River: the Knysna lagoon, the Tsitsikamma forests, a suspension bridge over a river mouth and Africa's highest bridge bungee. Three to five days of driving, and the one stretch of the country that works without a plan.

The Blyde River Canyon
05

The Blyde River Canyon

The third largest canyon in the world and the only large one that is green — the others are desert. The Three Rondavels are three hills shaped like African huts above a dam. It sits exactly on the road between Johannesburg and Kruger, so it becomes a driving day with four stops.

Did you know

Two things you probably did not know

History

South Africa has three capitals: Pretoria for the government, Cape Town for parliament and Bloemfontein for the courts. The split dates from 1910 and was a compromise between the colonies that were uniting.

Language

South Africa has twelve official languages, sign language among them, added in 2023. The national anthem is sung in five of them, switching between them mid-song.

Frequently asked

Before you go

Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.

Do you need a visa for South Africa?

EU, UK, US, Canadian and Australian passports do not — tourist stays of up to 90 days are visa-free. Other nationalities should apply well in advance, since South Africa does not issue visas on arrival; from July 2026 all travellers also file an online arrival declaration before crossing the border.

When is the best time for a safari?

May to September. That is their winter: dry, the grass is low, and animals concentrate around the remaining waterholes, so they are easier to see. It is the worst time for Cape Town and the coast, which are wet and cool then.

What does a day in Kruger cost to enter?

For a foreign visitor €32 per person per day, for every day you stay inside. It is charged per head rather than per vehicle, and every gate takes cards only.
