Ohrid takes two to three days, one for the old town on its headland, one for the lake and a third for Galičica, Struga or Sveti Naum. The town has 38,818 residents. UNESCO listed the region in 1979 and extended the listing in 1980 to cover its cultural heritage as well as the lake, which drops to 288 m.

Ohrid is said to have 365 churches, one for every day of the year, a legend that goes back to the traveller Evliya Çelebi. Far fewer stand today, which spares you the arithmetic. The airport lies 9 km north-west of town and runs seasonally. There is no airport bus, and a taxi costs €9–12, so Skopje stays the year-round way in and the last stretch is a bus ride.

Walk uphill, not down. Begin with the ancient theatre near the Upper Gate and climb to the fortress as it opens at nine, then drop to Plaošnik and follow the wooden walkway along the water to Kaneo for a swim or dinner. The fortress costs €2.43, and its walls run for more than 3 km. A good part was rebuilt in 2003, so what looks like a thousand-year-old rampart is partly new stone. Monday changes the plan, because the fortress and the museums run by the heritage institute are shut. The theatre and the outside of the Kaneo church stay open.

Swimming runs from June to September, with the lake at 24 to 25 °C in July and August. The town beach is busy, so many people head south, to Lagadin about 8 km away or to the quieter coves beyond it. For Sveti Naum, take the boat out at €20 return and the minibus back. The ticket ties you to the 15.15 sailing home, and the monastery deserves a longer swim than that allows. At dinner, ask where the trout comes from. The Ohrid trout is endangered and the wild catch is protected, so order plašica, the small fried lake fish, if the answer is vague.

Galičica national park is the best day out by car. The road over the pass looks down on both Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa, but there is no bus and the pass closes in winter. Struga, 14 to 15 km away, is a minibus ride at €1.60, and Bitola is a bus ride at €6.80. The Ohrid Summer festival runs from 12 July to 20 August every year. July and August are the busiest weeks, while May, June and September are quieter.

What to see

What to see in Ohrid

  • S

    Samuel’s Fortress

The walls cover the whole hill 100 m above the lake and run for about 3 km, although much of what you climb was rebuilt in 2003, with new battlements where nothing survived. The view over the roofs and the water repays the effort. Mondays are closed.

  • C

Church of St John at Kaneo

A church probably from the 13th century stands on a cliff above a small bay, with a single dome that carries a Christ Pantocrator. The outside can be seen at any hour. It is an active church, so a visit inside is never guaranteed.

free from outside · closed no fixed hours

  • P

    Plaošnik

Saint Clement, a pupil of Cyril and Methodius, died in 916 and was buried on this flat ground between the fortress and Kaneo. The church is a reconstruction from 2002 on the old foundations. The real age lies beneath it, in an early Christian basilica of the 5th and 6th centuries with a baptistery and mosaics.

    €1.60–2.45

  • A

    Ancient Theatre

Built at the end of the 3rd or the start of the 2nd century BC just below the fortress, it has been a stage again since 2001. The Ohrid Summer opens here each July. Nine rows of seats were uncovered. You can look from outside, but access is limited during performances.

  • C

    Church of St Sophia

The old archbishop’s cathedral keeps frescoes from the 11th to the 13th centuries, and under the Ottomans it served as a mosque. In summer it becomes a concert hall for the Ohrid Summer, with 200 to 250 seats inside and 470 on the porch.

    €1.60–2.45

  • B

Bay of Bones (Museum on Water)

A rebuilt village on stilts, modelled on the settlement that stood here from about 1200 to 700 BC, rises from the water near Peštani, around 16 km south of Ohrid. The reconstruction dates from 2008 and follows underwater excavations carried out between 1997 and 2005, and the boat to Sveti Naum calls here on its way. The museum rests on Mondays.
