The best time to visit Ohrid
Summer for swimming and the festival, spring and September for sightseeing and prices, winter for rain, an empty town and shorter hours.

Pick the month by the reason you are coming. The lake asks for July and August, sightseeing is easier in May, June and September, and winter leaves the town to the people who live in it. Read the climate table first, then see what each season adds to the plan and what it quietly takes away.
Through the year
The lake, the festival, the crowds
The lake sits at 24 to 25 °C in July and August, and the air peaks at 27.7 °C in August, so swimming is a daily habit rather than a plan. Beach bars open around 1 June. July and August are also the busiest and dearest weeks of the year, which you feel at the Kej in the evening and at the booking desk months before.
The Ohrid Summer Festival has run since 1961, always from about 12 July to 20 August. In 2026 it was the 66th edition. It opens in the ancient theatre under the fortress, and from 4 to 20 August in 2026 the concerts moved indoors, to the Church of St Sophia among other halls. Tickets are €10–16. If the theatre is your reason to come, wait for next July, because this year's programme is over.
3-star hotel, double room, per person per night

Spring and September
May, June and September are cheaper than high summer, and the water is warm enough for a swim by early June. September is the sweet spot for many travellers, with the crowds gone and the lake still warm. The fortress keeps its longer summer hours from 1 May to 30 September, open 9 am to 4.30 pm, so the whole old town fits into a single day without a rush.
The pass over Galičica opens as the weather turns, and the views of both lakes make spring a fair time for the mountain. Rooms by the water come at ordinary prices before the summer rush. Choose these months if you want to walk, climb the stairs to Kaneo, and still sit outside in the evening.

Rain, an empty town, shorter hours
January reaches a high of 6.2 °C and a low of minus 1.5 °C, and the year brings 662.3 mm of rain, with November the wettest at 90.5 mm. The town empties out and the lake goes quiet. It suits a short city break of churches and icons more than a holiday on the shore.
Hours shrink in step. From 1 October the fortress and the Museum on Water close at 3.30 pm, and the Icon Gallery at 2 pm. Online tickets for the boat to Sveti Naum are sold only from May to September, and the pass over Galičica stays shut in winter, last season from 21 November to 31 March. Parking in town is much cheaper than in summer, which is almost the only thing that gets cheaper.
