Mistakes everyone makes in Ohrid

The mistakes are Monday in Ohrid, the fortress after 4.30 pm, trout without asking, the boat without a plan to get back and the border on foot.

None of the usual mistakes in Ohrid is random, because each one sits on a fact that visitors learn too late. A state museum service closes four of its main sights on Mondays. A fortress shuts its gate hours before the light goes. A fish on the menu is an endangered species, and a boat will not wait for anyone who is still swimming. Every fix is free, and each section ends with one.

Monday in Ohrid

The state museum service that runs the fortress, the Robev House, the Icon Gallery and the Museum on Water keeps all four shut on Mondays, so a day planned around them ends at a locked gate. The ancient theatre stays open, since it is not fenced, and so do the outside of the church at Kaneo, the wooden walkway and the beaches. Treat Monday as the lake day. Sail to Sveti Naum, swim from the Kaneo rocks in the afternoon if the weather holds, and move the fortress to Tuesday, when the gate is open again.

The fortress near closing time

The fortress closes at 16.30 from 1 May to 30 September and at 15.30 from 1 October, and summer daylight lasts far longer than that. Arrive when it opens at 9.00. The climb is cooler then, and the tour groups have not yet reached the Upper Gate, which is the only gate preserved in full. The ticket costs €2.43 and is paid in cash in denars, since a card is not reliable at the gate. Much of the wall was rebuilt in 2003. Look at the joins, and do not expect a thousand-year-old skyline.

Trout without asking

Ohrid trout is listed as endangered by the IUCN, wild fishing is protected, and part of what reaches the market is illegal. That makes the order a question to put to the waiter before anything else. Ask whether the fish is farmed. A vague answer is an answer: order plašica, the small Ohrid fish that arrives whole and fried, or belvica, and keep the trout for another trip.

The boat without a plan to get back

Boat tickets to Sveti Naum cannot be refunded, the only return sailing leaves the monastery at 15.15 and reaches Ohrid at about 17.00, and online sales run only from May to September. The entry to the monastery, the Museum on Water and the boat through the springs are all paid separately, so the day costs more than the €20 on the ticket. Take the boat in one direction and the minibus in the other, and the afternoon is yours again. The ticket then buys the view from the water on the way out, and nothing more.

The border on foot

Nothing scheduled crosses the Albanian border by Sveti Naum, neither a bus nor a boat. The first village, Tushemisht, is about 45 minutes away on foot in one direction, and Pogradec lies 9 to 10 km beyond. Plan lunch in Tushemisht and the walk back. Or leave Albania for another crossing and another day, because the walk is the point and the border is not.

Taxis and cash

Taxis in Ohrid run on a city meter, and the tariff changed on 6 May 2026, with a higher rate at night. Agree the price or the meter before your bags go into the car, especially at the airport in high season, when a free car is not always waiting. Denars are the only legal tender, and some places accept euros at a rate that favours the till. Carry cash for the bakeries, the market and the fortress gate.
