The sandstone pillars in central Greece were shaped by erosion millions of years ago, and in the 14th century monks began climbing them looking for a place nobody would find them. Today the six surviving monasteries are reached by steps cut into the rock — once the only way up was a net and a rope.
There were once 24; today only six operate — four monasteries of monks and two of nuns. Each closes on a different day of the week, so it's worth checking the schedule before planning more than one. The dress code is strict and applied without exception: women wear a skirt below the knee and cover their shoulders (skirts are lent at the entrance if you don't have one), men wear long trousers.

Most visitors reach two or three monasteries in a day, with driving breaks between them — the distances aren't great, but the roads wind. The base is the town of Kalambaka (or the smaller village of Kastraki, closer to the rocks themselves), a ten-minute drive from the first monastery. Sunset from the free viewpoint above Kastraki, where most of the monasteries are visible at once, is reason enough not to rush back to town.

What to see in Meteora

Great Meteoron Monastery
The largest and highest of all, founded in the 14th century. Its museum holds items from the era when the only way up was a net raised and lowered by hand.
€5 · 30–45 min · closed Tuesday

Varlaam
Second largest, with an old wine barrel and the winch once used to hoist food and people. The frescoes in the main church date to the 16th century.
€5 · 30–45 min · closed Friday

Roussanou
The most photogenic, built on a narrow rock spire and today a monastery of nuns. A bridge across the chasm replaced the old net.
€5 · 30–45 min · closed Wednesday

Holy Trinity
Featured in the Bond film For Your Eyes Only. The climb is 140 steps cut directly into the rock — the toughest approach of all six.
€5 · 30–45 min · closed Thursday

The viewpoint above Kastraki
A free spot where most monasteries are visible at once, best just before sunset when the rock turns gold.

Two things you probably did not know
The monasteries stand on conglomerate pillars up to four hundred metres high, the remains of the floor of a former sea. Until the twentieth century the only way up was a net that the monks hauled with a winch.
The finale of the 1981 Bond film For Your Eyes Only was shot at Meteora, at the Agia Triada monastery. The monks opposed the filming and hung sheets from the roof to spoil the shots.
