The best time to visit Meteora
Meteora stays open twelve months, but winter adds a second closed day at two of the monasteries along with shorter hours — summer brings crowds and heat on stone steps with no shade.

- 1–2 days

Meteora is open year-round (each monastery closes on a different day) — so there is no month when every monastery is shut at once. The best period is spring and autumn: the light is sharper and there are fewer coach groups than in summer, when the shadeless stone steps get hot from midday.
The date here changes more than the crowds — it decides which monastery is closed on which day, and how long each stays open after midday.
Best time to go: spring and autumn
This is when the light is sharpest and the day-tour groups from Athens are smallest. The temperature suits the climb to Holy Trinity and the walk to the viewpoint, and the monasteries run their standard schedule — year-round (each monastery closes on a different day).

Summer
The stone steps and platforms have no shade, and the day tours from Athens fill the car parks by noon. Arriving early, by nine, avoids both the heat and the crowds; the opening hours are the same in the afternoon, just far less comfortable.

Winter
The monasteries still operate — year-round (each monastery closes on a different day) — but Great Meteoron and Varlaam close a further day outside the summer schedule, and hours run shorter at all six; check the schedule for the exact date before the trip, not a month ahead.
A skirt below the knee and covered shoulders for women, long trousers for men — the rule doesn't ease up in winter or at the height of summer.
Before you go
Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.
When is the best time to visit Meteora?
spring and autumn: the light is sharper, there are fewer groups and the temperature suits the climb to Holy Trinity.
Are the monasteries closed in winter?
No, year-round (each monastery closes on a different day). Great Meteoron and Varlaam add a further closed day outside the summer schedule, and hours run shorter at all six.
Is it too hot for a visit in summer?
It's manageable with an early start — the steps and platforms have no shade, so getting in before nine pays off more than in spring or autumn.
