The Zapadna Morava got into the rock here and couldn't get out, so it loops between Ovčar and Kablar instead of running straight. Those loops are called entrenched meanders, and they are why this gorge looks like someone drew the river out of boredom.

The second reason people come are the monasteries. More than thirty were built in the gorge from the fourteenth century onwards and ten are active today — a density that earned the place the name Serbian Mount Athos. The oldest is Nikolje, recorded in an Ottoman register of 1476 and the only one without a dome.

Since July 2026 there's a new reason: a glass viewpoint opened on Kablar, at 879 metres. Around twenty thousand people visited in its first month, which means queues at weekends.

What to see

What to see in Ovčar-Kablar Gorge

  • The Kablar glass viewpoint

Opened on 30 July 2026 at 879 metres, with a glass floor over the gorge itself. Entry is €4.26. Open 10:00–19:00 on weekdays and 9:00–19:00 at weekends. Weekends are busy — around 20,000 people came in the first month.

  • Nikolje Monastery

The oldest in the gorge, first recorded in an Ottoman register of 1476. It's the only one without a dome, and the lodging beside it was built by Prince Miloš in 1817. Entry is free, but the dress code is observed.

  • The Kablar circular trail

About 11.4 kilometres with over 600 metres of ascent, taking four to six hours. It passes several monasteries and comes out at a series of viewpoints. Not hard, but it needs proper shoes and water — there are no springs on the way.

    free

  • Ovčar Banja

A spa in the middle of the gorge, with springs at 35 to 38°C. It sits at 278 metres and works year-round. This is where people sleep if they stay two days, as it's the only place in the gorge with rooms and taverns.

  • Kayaking on the lake

Two dams built in 1954 created a chain of lakes about twelve kilometres long. Kayak tours run from April to October and take around three hours, right along the meanders. There's no rafting — the water is flat, it's a lake, not a rapid.

Two things you probably did not know

History

Ten monasteries stand in the gorge between the two mountains, which is why it is called the Serbian Holy Mountain. Most were founded in the sixteenth century, when monks withdrew into places hard to reach.

Geography

The West Morava twists through the gorge so sharply that it turns a series of tight bends in twenty kilometres. From the Kablar viewpoint you can see the river make almost a full circle around a hill.
