Belgrade needs two or three days, and public transport — bus, tram, trolleybus and the BG voz trains — is free, so Zemun and New Belgrade are one ticketless ride away. The city has been fought over in 115 wars and razed 44 times, which is why streets from different centuries sit side by side and don't line up.

Kalemegdan is where you begin, because of the confluence: the Sava enters the Danube below the walls, and across the water are Zemun and the start of the Pannonian Plain, on whose edge the city grew. At dusk the sun sets behind New Belgrade.

Belgrade

Nightlife has moved in the last decade. When construction of Belgrade Waterfront began in Savamala, its bars and clubs went to the courtyard of the former BIP brewery at Cetinjska 15; Skadarlija stayed a street of kafanas with live music, and the river clubs are moored on the Sava and the Danube. With two days, give one evening to the centre and the other to Cetinjska or Zemun.

What to see

What to see in Belgrade

  • Kalemegdan and the confluence

The fortress and park above the meeting of the Sava and Danube. Inside the walls are the Military Museum and Ružica church — a former Austrian gunpowder store, with two chandeliers cast from shell cases, bullets and sabres after the First World War.

    free

  • Knez Mihailova and Skadarlija

The pedestrian street from Republic Square to Kalemegdan and, on the other side of the square, Skadarlija — a cobbled street of kafanas, the nineteenth-century bohemian quarter.

    free

  • The Church of Saint Sava

The fourth-largest Orthodox church in the world. The interior was finished in 2020: about 15,000 square metres of mosaic, 1,230 of them in the dome, showing the Ascension. The crypt holds a separate church of Saint Lazar.

    free

  • Zemun and Gardoš

Until 1918 Zemun was an Austro-Hungarian border town, and the streets still show it. The 36-metre tower on Gardoš went up in 1896 for the thousandth anniversary of the Hungarian settlement of Pannonia; since 2006 it has been a gallery.

    free

  • Cetinjska 15

The courtyard of Belgrade's BIP brewery, bankrupt since 2015, with bars, clubs and art spaces in the old halls — where the scene that used to be in Savamala ended up.

    free

  • The Nikola Tesla Museum

A house on Krunska street holding Tesla's personal estate and an urn with his ashes. Visits are guided only, in Serbian or English, in groups that set off on the hour.

    €3.41–6.81 · 45 min

Three things you probably did not know

Science

Tesla's ashes stand in a gilded sphere, in his museum on Krunska Street. With them, over a hundred and sixty thousand documents from his estate, in the UNESCO Memory of the World register.

History

Fourteen kilometres downstream from the centre lies Vinca, the site that gave its name to a whole Neolithic culture. Pottery from there carries incised signs some seven thousand years old, among the earliest attempts at writing in Europe.

Geography

Ada Ciganlija was a river island until embankments joined it to the bank in 1967. The side channel left behind the dams became a four-kilometre lake. The city beach came about as a by-product of construction.
