Novi Sad takes a day: the Petrovaradin Fortress is across the Varadin Bridge, and the centre around Trg Slobode is flat and all on foot. The Soko fast train from Belgrade takes 36 minutes, but with Novi Sad station closed since late 2024 it stops at Petrovaradin, where a GSP bus to the centre is free.
The fortress is Austrian: its cornerstone was laid in 1692, five years after the Austrians took the stronghold from the Ottomans, and work went on until 1780. The Exit festival, held on the fortress since 2001, left Serbia after its 2025 edition, so July on the fortress is no longer festival season.

Beyond Petrovaradin begins Fruška Gora, a national park since 1960: a ridge about eighty kilometres long, topping out at Crveni Čot, 539 metres. Of the 35 monasteries named in Ottoman records, sixteen survive and are still active, scattered through the woods along the wine route — so they are done by car, two or three in half a day.

Two things you probably did not know
The clock on Petrovaradin fortress has its hands swapped: the large one shows the hour and the small one the minutes. That way the time could be read from the Danube and the far bank, where two thin hands look alike.
Under the fortress run sixteen kilometres of galleries on four levels, with loopholes for muskets and chambers for mines. They were built in the eighteenth century, and only a small part is visited today, with a guide and a torch.
