In brief

For the last two winters Novi Sad has had no city-run public celebration on 31 December. The programme for 2026/27 has not been announced, so this page covers what the city organised before, and how to spend the night without a stage.

New Year's Eve in Novi Sad has not meant a city concert on Liberty Square for the last two winters, so the sensible plan is a walk and a table. The night here is something you build yourself, around the Petrovaradin Fortress across the Danube, and nothing in this plan depends on a programme that does not exist yet.

What the city organised, and what it did not

The last celebration the city organised was held on 31 Dec 2023, in the lower town beneath the Petrovaradin Fortress. It ran on several stages with every programme free, and the line-up included ABBA Ring, Partibrejkersi and Ljubičice. The city did not organise Novi Sad fireworks that year. After it came two winters without a public celebration: in 2024 the mayor said it was important to give up big celebrations and be united in sorrow and solidarity, and for the night of 31 Dec 2025 the city again organised no public celebration in any square.

So the cliché of a New Year on Liberty Square with a concert does not describe the recent record. December still brings festive stalls to the square under the name Novosadski Zimzolend, which the organiser Ninamedia ran there in 2025, though its dates are not published and its location has moved between squares from year to year. On 31 December 2025 the citizens' group Zborovi građana Novog Sada called a silent gathering on Liberty Square at 23:45, lasting 16 minutes, in memory of those who died when the station canopy collapsed.

A night at the fortress

The Petrovaradin Fortress is an open public space, so access is simple. Opening hours: 24/7, all year; entry: free; booking required: no. At night it is lit, and the view from the ramparts takes in the Danube, the city and the Varadinski Bridge. Leave the centre early enough to be across the river before midnight.

  • Do not tie your hotel or transport to one stage until the city publishes a programme, because the venue has changed from year to year.
  • The city transport company JGSP has published a changed timetable for the New Year and Christmas holidays, so read it before planning the way home.
  • Reserve a table in the centre in advance, since there is no city party to absorb the crowd.
  • The route: Liberty Square, Dunavska Street, the bridge, the fortress.

1 January

New Year is celebrated on 1 and 2 January, both public holidays by law, so expect most shops to be closed while the fortress and the riverside walk stay open. If Zimzolend is still running, the square will tell you; no dates are promised here.

Where to sleep

Stay around Liberty Square if you want everything on foot, or in Petrovaradin, across the bridge and beside the fortress, if the fortress is the point of the night. Either way you can walk home after dinner.
