New Year's Eve in Kotor is a concert in the Old Town, not a firework display over the bay. This page covers where it has been held, how to get in before the square fills, and where to be if you skip it.
NYE in Kotor is a small-town affair squeezed inside the walls, and that is the whole planning problem. The Old Town is compact, the main square has been full before, and the programme for 2026/27 has not been published. What follows is what Kotor did between 2022 and 2025, written in the past tense, plus the parts that never change: the stone, the walls and the bay.
The Old Town square
The reference point is 31 December 2022, when Arms Square in the Old Town was packed for Zdravko Čolić. People who could not get in followed the concert on a video screen in front of the entrance, which tells you more about the capacity of the square than any figure would. The winter programme around the night is Kotor Winter Fest: 29 Nov 2025 to 31 Jan 2026 (2025/26 edition).
- Where: the Old Town, on Arms Square (Trg od oružja) beneath the Clock Tower.
- How you get in: through the gates of the Old Town, which is also where the overflow crowd stood in 2022.
- 2022: Zdravko Čolić on a packed square, with the video screen outside for everyone else.
- 2025/26: a children's New Year's programme on 30 December and a concert on the evening of 1 January; sources disagree on who played on 31 December, so no names are given here.
When to arrive
The start time of the concert is not published in the sources used here, so the safe plan is to enter the Old Town before dinner rather than after it. A table booked inside the walls gives you a reason to be there early and a place to sit while the square fills. Anyone arriving at the gate near midnight is gambling on the 2022 crowd not repeating.
Be inside the Old Town early, or sleep inside the walls or in Dobrota and stay put. The square rewards patience and punishes late arrivals.
Getting around that night
The Old Town is a pedestrian zone, so the last stretch of the night is on foot whatever you do. Whether night buses and taxis run, and when, is not published in the sources used here; ask the operator or your hotel in advance. The page on getting around Kotor and the Bay covers how the town connects to the rest of the coast.
Midnight and the fireworks myth
The cliché says Kotor ends the night with fireworks, the way Budva does. The record is thinner. The line-ups were pop and regional, with Čolić in 2022 and Severina and Dino Merlin in 2023/24. No source reports fireworks in the Old Town, and the 2022 reports describe fireworks in Budva only. Treat midnight in Kotor as a concert with a countdown, and plan for the music and the crowd rather than for a sky show.
A table instead of the square
The quieter version of the night is a seated dinner at a hotel with a rooftop or a terrace. Cattaro Boutique Hotel and La Citadelle, which has a rooftop bar, stand inside the Old Town, while Forza Mare has a restaurant terrace on the water in Dobrota. Ask each hotel whether it sells a New Year's package. Booking guides advise reserving three to six months ahead, and a table here beats a late place in the square queue.
1 January
Wake late, because the 2025/26 edition repeated its concert on the evening of 1 January. A slow day on the walls toward the fortress of San Giovanni above the town fits the hangover well. Opening hours for shops and museums on this day are not published, so keep the plan loose.
A ticket with a chosen time slot, booked ahead.
Where to sleep
Sleeping inside the Old Town puts the square a few minutes from the bed, which solves the arrival problem. Dobrota suits a quieter night with the bay in front of the door. The page on where to stay compares the parts of the Bay in more detail.

Settle the room or the table first; the square will take care of midnight.
Check the same room on both sites: price and cancellation terms can differ.
Montenegro, in brief
What now
If this sounds like your trip, start here.

Kotor
→A town wedged between sea and cliff, with walls that climb the mountain

Kotor in 2 days
→Two days arranged around the cruise ships: the walls and the town before the passengers land, the bay while they are in, the old town again once the ships leave.

Day trips from Kotor
→Lovćen up twenty-five hairpins, Budva in half an hour, Lake Skadar in an hour and twenty — and one trip that is better by boat.

Where to stay in Kotor
→The old town puts the walls and the cathedral at the door; Dobrota and Prčanj hold the same bay without the evening cruise crowd.

What Kotor costs
→The walls, the Lovćen cable car and a hostel bed are the biggest lines in a daily budget for Kotor — all in euro, price by price.

Two churches and a prosciutto village beyond Kotor's six sights
→Two churches inside the walls that the six-sight list skips, and the village above town that gives its name to the prosciutto.

What to eat in Kotor
→Njeguši prosciutto comes down from the mountain above the town, and the fish soup and mussels come from the very bay they're eaten beside.

The best time to visit Kotor
→In Kotor the month picks the sea temperature and the number of ships picks the crowd — two different calendars.

Getting around Kotor
→Tivat airport has no bus to Kotor, the old town isn't driven at all, and Lovćen is reached by road or by an eleven-minute cable car.

Mistakes everyone makes in Kotor
→Tivat airport has no bus, the Lovćen cable car stops in high wind, and a Lake Skadar boat is priced per vessel; six things that most often wreck a day here.

Montenegro
→The Bay, the riviera or Ulcinj for the sea, Durmitor for July — choose the coast by its beaches and the north by the month
