A plan for 31 December and 1 January in Valletta: the concert on St George's Square, the fireworks over the Grand Harbour, the late buses home and where to stand when the square is full.
The crush on St George's Square is optional on New Year's Eve in Valletta. The fireworks go off over the Grand Harbour and the crowd watching them spread over several places, so the square is for the concert and the countdown, and the real task of NYE is the way home. The programme for 2026/27 has not been announced, which is why most of what follows is the last edition told in the past tense.
St George's Square
The national celebration is held in St George's Square and organised by the Valletta Cultural Agency, and the latest edition with a published programme is 2025/26. Start time: 2025: from 10pm in St George's Square. On stage: 2025: Glen Vella and his band, the Palace String Orchestra, John Newman at midnight. The organiser's estimate of the crowd: 2025: about 70,000 people. The last two editions were free and open-air, and the conditions for 2026/27 have not been published.
New Year in Valletta for 2026/27 exists so far only as a line in the agency's calendar: 31 Dec 2026 is in the Valletta Cultural Agency calendar, 10pm-2am, programme not published. The programme is announced closer to the night, so treat every name above as last year's.
Take the square if you want the concert and the countdown in front of a stage. Take Triton Square or the harbour streets if you want the fireworks without that crush, and settle the way home before you leave.
Fireworks over the Grand Harbour
Midnight belongs to the harbour: 2025: a 25-minute fireworks display over the Grand Harbour at midnight. The organiser says the crowd spread over the square, the main streets, Triton Square and the streets along the water, so the display was watched from more than one place. The Upper Barrakka Gardens are a viewpoint over the Grand Harbour, better kept for a daytime walk.
- Triton Square (Pjazza Tritoni), in front of the City Gate, where people also gathered in 2025.
- The streets along the Grand Harbour, which the organiser lists among the places where the crowd stood.
- Bormla (Cospicua), across the water, where a public concert of its own took place that night, with the fireworks in view from that side.
Late-night buses
Valletta can be crossed on foot, but a bed outside the city means a bus. In 2025 the extra service was 2025: extra trips on 16 regular routes and five night routes to the Valletta terminus. A ticket on board costs: €3 (free with a personalised Tallinja card). A regular single ride is €2 winter, €2.50 summer, and there is no day ticket, so the night price is the only fare to remember.
New Year's Day
The first of January is a public holiday, and it shows on the museum doors. The Hypogeum is shut on: 1 January, Good Friday, 24, 25 and 31 December. The Grand Master's Palace and the National Museum of Archaeology close on the same days, and St John's Co-Cathedral is closed on Sundays and public holidays. The Lascaris War Rooms are closed on: Sundays and on holidays (New Year, Good Friday, Easter, Christmas Eve, Christmas). A ticket to the Co-Cathedral on the days after costs €15. The Fairyland Christmas village on Triton Square, with a Ferris wheel over the Grand Harbour, ran in the last edition on these dates: 5 Dec 2025 to 4 Jan 2026 (2025/26 edition). Dates for 2026/27 have not been found.
