New Year's Eve in Sofia is a municipal concert on Battenberg Square, followed by a light show at midnight. This page covers when to get in, what is closed, how transport ran and a seated plan B at the opera.
Sofia on NYE is a street party with a security perimeter, and knowing that before you leave the hotel saves an hour in the cold. The city runs a concert on the square, closes the boulevard next to it, and sends everybody through checkpoints before the music starts. The last published programme was the 2025/26 edition, so what follows describes that winter, and the plan for 2026/27 has not been announced. Midnight itself belongs to a light show, because the Sofia fireworks that many guides still promise have been replaced since 2024.
Battenberg Square
The municipality stages its New Year concert on Knyaz Alexander I Battenberg Square, right in the centre. In 2025/26 the line-up ran from Signal and Mary Boys Band to Irina Florin, Nikolay Slaveev, Pressie and Dim4ou, with Militsa Gladnishka and Atanas Stoyanov hosting, and the main set came late in the evening. Concert start: 9:30 pm (2025/26 edition). Treat that line-up as a sample of the style, since the 2026/27 names have not been published.
- Six checkpoints control the way into the square.
- Large rucksacks, weapons, sharp objects and fireworks stay out.
- The boulevard beside the square is closed to traffic.
- Drones are banned over the square.
When to arrive and what is closed
Count backwards from the music. The checkpoints opened in 2025/26 at from 8:30 pm (2025/26 edition). The street closure around the square, Tsar Osvoboditel Boulevard between Independence Square and Rakovski Street, came with its own hour: from 7 pm (2025/26 edition).
So eat in the early evening, walk in while the checkpoints are still quiet, and leave the daypack at the hotel.
Go to the concert if you want midnight outdoors, and be through the checkpoint in the first part of the evening. If you would rather sit down, book the opera gala as early as the tickets go on sale.
Getting around that night
Metro, trams and buses ran until the morning in 2025/26, which solved the problem of getting home from the centre. Last service: until 4:30 am (2025/26 edition). The page on the metro and tickets explains the rest.
A light show instead of fireworks
Many guides still describe fireworks over Vitosha and the National Palace of Culture, and that description is out of date. The municipality replaced the fireworks with a light show in 2024 and again in 2025, and asked residents to leave their own pyrotechnics at home. Its 2025 reason was a more eco-friendly celebration, and the 2024 notice added people with disabilities and pets.
A drone show was also announced for 2025/26, as a one-off marking the euro, so you should not plan around a repeat. Plan for a midnight with lights, music and a countdown, not rockets.

A seat instead of the square
The Sofia Opera and Ballet, at 30 Dondukov Boulevard, holds traditional gala concerts on the last three evenings of the year. In 2025 all three, 29 to 31 December, sold out: 29, 30 and 31 Dec 2025. So tickets go early, and they come from the opera itself. The 31 December gala is the dressed-up alternative to an open square.
Choose it if you want chairs, warmth and an actual stage, and choose the square if you would rather stand in a crowd than miss the countdown.
Customs and 1 January
The old custom for the first day of the year is survakane. Children go from house to house with a decorated branch of cornel, wish them health, and the day is also Vasilovden, or St Basil's Day. In the capital the custom is easier to meet in a village than on a boulevard, so do not count on it.
For the rest of 1 January, sleep late and walk the centre, or head up Vitosha if the sky is clear. Check each museum website for hours, since they change around the holidays.
Where to sleep
Sleep within walking distance of the square, because the closed boulevard and the crowd mean the last stretch is on foot anyway. Book early, and the district guide covers where to look.

Pick the square if you want a crowd at midnight and the opera if you want a chair, and book the stay before you decide.
Check the same room on both sites: price and cancellation terms can differ.
Bulgaria, in brief
What now
If this sounds like your trip, start here.

Sofia
→A city where metro works in 2010 dug up Roman streets, and where a city bus is all it takes to reach the first mountain trail.

Sofia in 2 days
→The centre on foot on day one, then Boyana and Vitosha on day two: the museum and the church sit in the same district as the mountain trails, so you never cross town twice for the same side.

Day trips from Sofia
→Rila Monastery and the Seven Lakes want organised transport and a full day; Plovdiv and Koprivshtitsa go by train, no guide required.

Where to stay in Sofia
→In Sofia the neighbourhood is chosen by metro line, not by the hotel photo: the centre is all on foot, Lozenets is quieter, Studentski Grad is cheaper with a longer ride in.

What Sofia costs
→A frugal day in Sofia is €21–32 per person: a hostel, street food, a set lunch and two metro rides, all in euro.

The Sofia the six-sight list skips
→The oldest building in the city, a working synagogue, a museum of toppled statues and a park with no ticket: four places that do not make the six main sights.

What to eat in Sofia
→Shopska salad opens the meal, a kebapche is one bite rather than the whole plate, and the Ladies' Market shows what is actually in season.

The best time to visit Sofia
→Sofia has a continental climate with no sea to soften it: summer can push past 30°C, winter is cold and grey, and May, June and September strike the best balance of weather and crowds.

Getting around Sofia
→Sofia's airport has its own metro station: one line, no change, straight to the centre.

Mistakes everyone makes in Sofia
→There are no leva to change any more, the cathedral crypt is shut on Mondays, and Rila Monastery is not an after-lunch trip: mistakes that cost time or money here.

Bulgaria
→A capital, a Roman city, a medieval fortress and the sea — in a line that never doubles back
