Sofia in 2 days
The centre on foot on day one, then Boyana and Vitosha on day two — the museum and the church sit in the same district as the mountain trails, so you never cross town twice for the same side.

This plan follows the side of town, not a list of sights: day one is the centre around Serdika square, day two is Boyana and Vitosha, because they sit next to each other on the southern edge of the city. Split them up and the metro-and-bus ride doubles for no reason.
The centre: from Serdika to Alexander Nevsky
Serdika, the remains of the Roman city dug up in 2010–2012, right by the metro exit — eight streets, baths and a west gate from the 2nd century, under Emperor Marcus Aurelius. Free, under a glass roof, 7–22.
Alexander Nevsky, a cathedral built as a memorial to the Russian soldiers of the 1877–78 war. Cathedral and icon crypt: free (crypt €10); crypt: Tue–Sun 10–18.
Lunch at the Ladies' Market: a grilled kebapche for €0.92 or a Shopska salad for €7.61, among stalls of vegetables and spices along Stefan Stambolov Boulevard.
A walk to the St George Rotunda, the oldest surviving building in the city — a Roman structure from the early 4th century, with frescoes from several eras. Free.
Dinner in the centre, €9–11 for a main course, beer €2.50 (Zagorka, 0.5 l).
Vitosha does not fit this day. The centre is dense and walked; the mountain wants its own day and the other side of town.

Boyana and Vitosha, one side of town
Metro to Vitosha station (line M2), then bus 64 to Boyana — about fifty minutes with the change.
The History Museum, in Todor Zhivkov's former residence from 1974: €9, Oct–Mar 9:30–18, Apr–Sep 9:30–19. Allow ninety minutes for the permanent collection.
A fifteen-minute walk to Boyana Church, on the UNESCO list since 1979 for its 1259 frescoes. Visits are capped at up to 10 min per group; entry €10.
Lunch in Boyana or back towards Aleko — Vitosha starts right there, on the southern edge of the city.
Vitosha, half a day to a full day depending on the route; a city bus goes up.
This day holds the museum, the church and the mountain, but shortens each one. For a real day of hiking, split it in two — Boyana one morning, Vitosha the whole next day.

Before you go
Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.
Where does a third day in Sofia go?
Out of town: to Rila Monastery, 2 h 30 (one way) by shuttle, or to Plovdiv, 2 h 40 by train. Both take a full day, so a third day does not go back to the centre.
Can Boyana and Vitosha be done in one day?
Yes, but each gets less time. For a proper day of hiking, split them over two days.
How do you get to Boyana?
Metro to Vitosha station (M2), then bus 64 — about fifty minutes with the change.
