The best time to visit Sofia

Sofia has a continental climate with no sea to soften it — summer can push past 30°C, winter is cold and grey, and May, June and September strike the best balance of weather and crowds.

Where to go: five more questions →

Two things pick the month for Sofia: whether Vitosha is walkable and whether the city sits at a bearable temperature. May, June and September deliver both — a snow-free mountain and no weather extremes. What July or January actually mean in degrees is in the table below.

Month by month

ItemAmount
January–February−4 to 7 °C; coldest, occasional snow
March–April1 to 17 °C; the city wakes up, but April can be unsettled
May–June10 to 25 °C; the best balance of weather and crowds, and the wettest months
July–August15 to 28 °C; hottest, individual days over 30 °C
September–October6 to 23 °C; the second-best season, steadier than spring
November2 to 11 °C; grey, the turn towards winter
December−2 to 5 °C; cold, the Vitosha ski season begins

Summer is hot

August's average high is around 28°C, but that is an average — individual days in July and August regularly top 30°C, since the city has no sea to soften the heat. Travel then and the plan is to put indoor stops (museums, Boyana Church) in the afternoon and outdoor ones (Serdika, Vitosha) in the morning.

Vitosha changes by season

From late April to October the mountain is for walking: the trails are dry, and bus 66 to Aleko runs the same timetable all year. From roughly early December to mid-April, Aleko, Bulgaria's oldest ski centre at about 1,800 metres, opens for skiing — then a walk is a different trip, the snow and the trails belong to skiers.

The rain that changes day trips

May and June carry the most rainy days of the year, about ten a month — that does not spoil the city, but it changes day trips: the Seven Rila Lakes at 2,000 metres and above in fog are not the same outing, and the forecast that morning matters more than the calendar.
