Day trips from Sofia
Rila Monastery and the Seven Lakes want organised transport and a full day; Plovdiv and Koprivshtitsa go by train, no guide required.
- Rila Monastery
- 2 h 30 (one way) by shuttle
- Seven Rila Lakes
- about 2 h (one way) to the chairlift
- Plovdiv
- 2 h 40 by train

Four destinations fit into a day from Sofia, each its own way: a shuttle reaches Rila Monastery and the Seven Lakes, a train reaches Koprivshtitsa and Plovdiv. None fits into half a day, so each is planned as a day of its own, not an add-on to the city.
Rila Monastery
The largest Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria, founded in the 10th century by Saint John of Rila, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. The Traventuria shuttle takes 2 h 30 (one way) one way, a return ticket €30 (shuttle, return = 2 tickets). The monastery and church are free; the treasury and museum charge separately.

The Seven Rila Lakes
Seven glacial lakes between 2,100 and 2,500 metres, above Panichishte. A chairlift runs from the base up to the ridge at about 2,100 m; from there a short walk reaches the viewpoint where all seven are visible, and the full loop takes four to five hours on foot. The shuttle from Sofia and the chairlift together take about 2 h (one way), priced from €30 transport + €16 chairlift — private operators, not a state fare. Fog or rain at that altitude changes the plan faster than it does in the city, so check the forecast that morning, not the day before.
Plovdiv
Bulgaria's second city: the Roman theatre, the Revival-era Old Town and Kapana sit a few hundred metres apart, so they fit into the day between two trains of 2 h 40 each.

Koprivshtitsa
The village where the April Uprising against Ottoman rule began in 1876 — an architectural and historical reserve since 1971, with more than 380 preserved Revival-era houses. train (BDZ), station 7 km from town; the journey takes 2 h 20, and getting from the station into the village centre takes extra time.
How long each takes
Shuttle for Rila and the lakes, train for Plovdiv and Koprivshtitsa; travel time one way.

What to know in advance
- The train fare to Plovdiv and Koprivshtitsa only shows on BDZ's site at the purchase step, so that is where to check it.
- The Seven Lakes depend on the weather. Fog at 2,000 metres is not fog in the city — the forecast that morning decides.

Before you go
Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.
Which day trip from Sofia is best without organised transport?
Plovdiv or Koprivshtitsa — both run by train, no guide and no advance booking.
Can Rila Monastery and the Seven Lakes be done in one day?
Not sensibly. They run in different directions with different operators, and each wants a full day on its own.
Do you need a guide for Rila Monastery?
No. The Traventuria shuttle runs there directly, and the monastery and church are free to enter.
