Zagreb sees in the year with a free concert on its main square and no city fireworks. This page covers when to arrive, where to go if the crowd is too much, and what is open on 1 January.
A New Year's Eve without fireworks sounds like a poor deal, and Zagreb has quietly accepted that verdict. For the 2022/23 edition the city dropped its organised display in favour of confetti, visual effects and music, and the night now rests on a free concert on Ban Jelačić Square. The latest edition published, 2025/26, put a stage, a host and a crowd in the open air. The mayor wished the city a happy new year from the podium after midnight. The programme for 2026/27 has not been announced, so read zagreb.hr or infozagreb.hr before you book anything. What follows is how the last edition went.
Ban Jelačić Square
The main public party stands on Ban Jelačić Square, put together by the City of Zagreb and the city tourist board, outdoors and free of charge. In the 2025/26 edition the evening ran on a short bill: the act Idem opened, Luzeri and Elemental followed, and Dubioza Kolektiv played last, while the host Martina Validžić kept the square moving. Locals call the night Silvestrovo. The square is the obvious place to meet for the countdown. Several tram lines stop right at Jelačić plac, so the square is easy to find even if you arrive from the station on foot.
Midnight and the fireworks
Zagreb fireworks are the cliché to retire first. Dozens of Croatian towns gave up their organised displays that season, Zagreb among them. Confetti, visual effects and music took the place of the rockets. The sources on the 2025/26 square party do not mention fireworks, so plan the midnight around the countdown, the stage and the champagne, and treat any rocket in the sky as a bonus. Private pyrotechnics are a poor substitute: an animal welfare group says firecrackers are banned all year round, and the police seize the stronger classes, F2 to F4.
When to arrive
The programme starts in the evening and builds toward midnight. A late arrival costs you the best places but not the countdown. The timetable the city published for 2025/26: first act 19:30 (2025 edition), last act 23:30 (2025 edition). The year before, the bill began at 19:00, the acts followed from 20:30 and the last one came on at 0:15. Press reports describe large crowds on the square. A practical rule, which is advice and not a rule of the city: be there before 11 pm if you want to stand near the stage.
Getting around that night
ZET, the city transport operator, publishes the timetable for the night of 31 December at zet.hr, and it is worth reading before you choose a hotel. The Lower Town is flat and easy to cross on foot, so a bed in the centre solves the walk home by itself. If you do ride, the ZET day ticket costs €3.98.
Alternatives to the crowd
- Europski trg has a second stage. In 2025/26 the British band The Brand New Heavies played there, and the music continued after midnight.
- The city also staged a children's party at noon on Trg Petra Preradovića, a good use of the daylight if you have a family in tow: start 11:30 (2025 edition).
- Advent runs over the turn of the year (28 Nov 2026 – 7 Jan 2027), and last season the Ice Park was open on both 31 December and 1 January, so the stalls and the rink are a calmer evening. The Advent page has the market route.
- Club nights with a ticket: Močvara, Tvornica Kulture and Boogaloo were on the list Time Out published for 2024. Book ahead, as prices and line-ups change every year.
If you want one evening the way Zagreb itself does it, take Ban Jelačić Square: free, run by the city, and something to hear and see all night. Leave the fireworks expectations at the hotel. If crowds are not your thing, spend the evening at Advent or buy a club night with a ticket.
Customs
Beyond the square, the city's own information site describes spontaneous gatherings with music and champagne around town, plus restaurants, clubs and hotels that put on festive dinners. A table at a restaurant goes first, so book it early if the plan includes dinner.
1 January
New Year's Day is a public holiday in Croatia, so most shops, cafés, restaurants and banks are usually closed, a small grocery or two stay open, and public transport runs on a reduced timetable. The Croatian History Museum and the Ivan Goran Kovačić Memorial Museum are closed on 1 and 6 January in the schedule they publish. What stays open is Advent, which runs to 7 January, and the Ice Park with it. On the first evening of 2026 people were simply walking Zrinjevac and the main square, which is a fair plan for the day. For something under a roof, the Museum of Broken Relationships and the Grič tunnel walking tour with the funicular are the usual picks, but confirm the date with the operator, since neither is confirmed for 1 January.
A ticket with a chosen time slot, booked ahead.
Where to sleep
The Lower Town, around Jelačić plac, Zrinjevac and the main station, is a short walk from the square, so getting back after midnight is simple. New Year's Eve and Advent overlap, so book early; that is advice and not a reading of the market. The accommodation page compares areas.

Take the free square for the countdown, and do not count on a rocket over the city.
Check the same room on both sites: price and cancellation terms can differ.

What Zagreb costs
→A day in Zagreb per person, in euros — where the gap is between hostel and hotel, and where it is only a couple of coffees.

Zagreb after the main six
