In brief

Rome's New Year's Eve runs on a free concert, a metro that stops at 2.30 and a fireworks ban that nobody obeys. Here is the order of the night, and what stays open on 1 January.

Rome does not wait for a fireworks show at midnight, because no official show was confirmed for last year. It stages a concert in a Roman chariot stadium, and the fireworks arrive on their own from the rooftops. The programme for 31 December 2026 has not been published, so this guide follows the 2025/26 edition and uses it as the pattern. NYE here is built around the Circo Massimo, a long walk home and a late start on New Year's Day, and the plan below puts those three in order.

Circo Massimo

The main party and what is free

The Concerto di Capodanno is the only big organised event of the night, and last year it was free of charge for the fourth year running. Entry was through two gates, on Viale Aventino and on Via del Circo Massimo, and the schedule ran like this: 2025: 31 Dec from 9 pm, continuing past midnight. More than 40,000 people were expected, so everyone went through metal detectors, and the queue at the gate is part of the evening. The city built the bill around Italian pop. Alessandra Amoroso, Fabri Fibra and Tananai headlined last year, radio presenters from RDS hosted, and a DJ set followed the countdown before the night closed with Don Cash. Treat those names as an example of the format, since the 2026 line-up is not out. The park is a flat running track in the valley between the Aventine and the Palatine, so you stand on grass with the ruins of the imperial palaces above you, and a crowd of that size fills it from the stage to the far gate.

Where to watch midnight over the rooftops

Rome fireworks are an unofficial affair. Last year the mayor's order banned firecrackers from the last night of the year onwards: 2025/26: from 00.01 on 31 Dec to midnight on 6 Jan, fine €25–500. Sparklers and fountains were allowed, and a local guide reported that the ban was widely ignored, so midnight came as private fireworks over the roofs rather than one city show. No official display was confirmed, which makes this the New Year in Rome that happens above your head and not on a stage. For the view, the Gianicolo hill above Trastevere and the Pincio terrace above Piazza del Popolo are the usual choices, and the smaller Giardino degli Aranci on the Aventine fills fast. Hotel rooftop bars also sell the view, but only with a reservation. Glass is not banned in Rome, which changes the packing list for a hill and nothing else. If the crowds put you off, an evening dinner cruise on the Tiber from near Castel Sant'Angelo shows the river lit up, and it suits the night of 30 December better than the 31st. A night walking tour of the old centre works on the same evening.

Getting home after midnight

The metro runs late on this one night, but the surface network does not. Press reports for last year gave these times: 2025/26: metro until 2.30 am, night buses nMA, nMB, nMB1 and nMC from 2.30 to 8 am. Ordinary buses and trams stopped far earlier: 2025/26: most lines until 9 pm, a few until 2.30 am. These come from news coverage and not from the transport operator, so treat them as the pattern and not the promise. Line B has a stop right at the Circo Massimo, which makes the concert the easiest party to leave, and it passes Colosseo on the way to Termini. Taxis were hard to find after midnight, and the walk home is realistic for the centre, so sleep inside the ring of the Colosseum and Piazza Venezia if you can.

Cenone, lentils and red underwear

Capodanno at the table is the cenone, a long dinner whose centrepiece is cotechino or zampone served over lentils, and the lentils stand for coins. Spumante or prosecco opens the countdown, and red underwear is the other rule. Throwing old things out of the window has almost died out in Rome and survives more in the south, in Naples. Restaurants usually offered an early and a late sitting, and the late one is the one that gets you to midnight in your seat.

Quieter alternatives

For a night without the crowd there is a choice of halls and churches. Last year the quieter evenings looked like this.

  • Grande Gospel in the Sala Sinopoli of the Auditorium Parco della Musica, from 10 pm.
  • The Gran Concerto di San Silvestro in the church of San Silvestro al Quirinale.
  • Enrico Brignano's Capodanno show at the Teatro Sistina, from 9.30 pm and with a midnight beer.
  • The Vatican's Te Deum on the 31st, with the New Year Mass on the next day: 2025/26: Te Deum on 31 Dec at 5 pm, Mass on 1 Jan at 10 am.
  • An opera or baroque concert in a church or palace, such as the Tre Tenori at Palazzo Ripetta.

The Tiber dive and a short museum list

Sleep first. The one fixed event of the day is the tuffo nel Tevere, when a few swimmers jump from Ponte Cavour into the river, a tradition that began in 1946. Last year the dive followed this schedule: 1 Jan at noon, after the Janiculum cannon. Museums are the weak point of the day. Last year the Colosseum opened with shorter hours, and the arena and underground stayed closed: 2025/26: 1 Jan 8.30 am to 4.30 pm, last entry 3.30 pm. The Vatican Museums were shut: 2025/26: closed on 1 Jan. The Pantheon kept short hours: 2025/26: 1 Jan 9 am to 5 pm, last entry 4.30 pm. The Borghese Gallery opened only with a reservation, again for a short window: 2025/26: 1 Jan 10 am to 2 pm, booking required. The Quirinale Palace, the Doria Pamphilj gallery and Ostia Antica were closed. For the Colosseum and Borghese, buy the timed tickets before the trip, and book Vatican Museums tickets for the 30th or the 2nd. A parade on Piazza del Popolo also ran last year: 2025/26: 1 Jan at 3.30 pm, but only one guide mentions it.

Where to sleep

Stay on the Aventine side of the centre, near the Circo Massimo or Colosseo stops of line B, and the way back is a short walk or a ride that ends before the long wait begins.
