Twenty-five European cities compared for 31 December: where the square is free, where fireworks need a ticket, where the metro stops early and what is open on 1 January.
New Year's Eve in Europe is really four different nights, and the kind you pick matters more than the city you pick it in. A free square with a stage, fireworks behind a ticket, a ritual with no fireworks at all and a quiet evening on a boat each suit a different traveller. Getting home after midnight divides the cities even more sharply than the programme does. Lisbon and Ljubljana offer free fireworks, London sells them, and Athens and Amsterdam closed their public transport before the countdown in 2025/26. So the search for the best places for New Year's Eve in Europe begins with a decision about the night, and the map comes second.
How to pick a city
Sort the cities by the kind of night first, and the shortlist nearly writes itself. Each choice below names two or three places, and the later sections explain what the night looks like once you are there.
- Free public countdown with a programme: Vienna runs the Silvesterpfad, but pyrotechnics are banned there and no city fireworks were announced. Lisbon fills Terreiro do Paço with a show over the Tagus that lasted about ten minutes in 2025/26. Ljubljana fires from the castle hill, and the length is here: five minutes.
- Fireworks only with a ticket: London has no free zone at all. Berlin holds its countdown at the Brandenburg Gate: free, but with a pre-booked ticket (2025/26 edition).
- A ritual instead of fireworks: Madrid eats twelve grapes with the bells of Puerta del Sol, Rome stages a free concert at Circo Massimo (2025: 31 Dec from 9 pm, continuing past midnight) and Zagreb puts a concert on Trg bana Jelačića, where fireworks should not be counted on.
- One big spectacle in one place: Paris lights the Champs-Élysées with a mapping show (23:50) and a midnight display. Athens gathers at Syntagma for what the city calls silent fireworks and a drone show: 2025: silent fireworks and a drone show at midnight. Barcelona uses Montjuïc, with fireworks, drones and the Font Màgica: 2025: 11:50 pm–12:15 am.
- A quieter night, a boat or a view: Budapest has no city fireworks, so a boat or Gellért Hill does the job. Prague had no fireworks or video mapping in 2025/26: the city staged neither fireworks nor videomapping (2025/26). Amsterdam offers Museumplein and the Light Festival early in the evening.
- Travelling with children: Ljubljana runs a children's programme (16:00), Zagreb a midday countdown for the young (11:30 (2025 edition)) and Amsterdam a children's programme on Museumplein (2025/26 edition: children's programme from 19:00, live acts from 23:00, countdown from 23:50). London asks a ticket even for the small ones.
- A stage and a countdown on a square: Timișoara on Piața Victoriei, where the city kept its fireworks in 2025/26 while several large Romanian cities dropped theirs, Verona on Piazza Bra under the Arena, with fireworks at midnight, and Sibiu on Piața Mare, where a concert and a countdown ran beside the Christmas market in 2025.
- A show instead of fireworks: Graz stages a free water-and-light show on Hauptplatz in five blocks, and only the last waits for midnight, so you can fit it around dinner. Lyon offered the last light projection of the year on the Fourvière basilica.
- No city stage at all: Brno closes the year at the Cabbage Market, Gdańsk gathers on Długi Targ, Leipzig on Augustusplatz and the Markt, and Dresden along the Elbe. Nuremberg fences off its old centre against private fireworks, and a concert is the plan instead.
- Markets that still run at the turn of the year: Brno's Cabbage Market: 13 Nov – 31 Dec 2026; Dresden's Augustusmarkt: 25 Nov 2026 – 3 Jan 2027; Nuremberg's Winterdorf: 13 Nov 2026 – 9 Jan 2027; Leipzig's Wintermarkt: 30 Oct 2026 – 31 Jan 2027; Sibiu's market: 13 Nov 2026 – 3 Jan 2027.
- A week or two with Advent on the side: Vienna (Christmas markets in Vienna, with Schönbrunn open into January: 6 Nov 2026 – 6 Jan 2027), Prague (Prague's Advent markets: 28 Nov 2026 – 6 Jan 2027), Zagreb (Zagreb's Advent: 28 Nov 2026 – 7 Jan 2027), Ljubljana (Ljubljana's Christmas market: 27 Nov 2026 – 3 Jan 2027), Budapest (Budapest's markets, still open on 31 December: 11am–3am), Berlin (Berlin's Christmas markets: 13 Nov 2026 – 1 Jan 2027) and London (London's Christmas markets: 19 Nov 2026 – 3 Jan 2027).
Fireworks, a ticket or free
The line that every European capital launches a city fireworks show at midnight does not survive the list below. Prague has had none since the show for 2019, Zagreb stopped organising one after 2022/23, and Vienna bans pyrotechnics on its Silvesterpfad. Budapest has no official show (the state one is held on 20 August), while Rome and Madrid advertise none. Athens fires a silent version, and Belgrade skipped the city centre altogether last winter.
- Vienna: the Silvesterpfad is free, with dates and hours here: 31 Dec 2026, 14:00 to 02:00. At midnight the Pummerin bell rings and the Blue Danube waltz is danced in the street. The path was full shortly before midnight in 2025/26: about 550,000 (2025/26 edition).
- Budapest: no city show, so locals fire their own. The window and the fine: from 8pm on 31 Dec to 2am on 1 Jan, €552–3,315 (HUF 200,000 to 1.2 million). Vörösmarty Square on the M1 line is free for the countdown, and Gellért Hill, 235 m high, gives the view.
- Prague: the rockets you see over the river are private, and the city has had no official show since the one for 2019. The fine, from the 2024/25 edition: up to €410, up to €4,100.
- Berlin: the Brandenburg Gate countdown had a cap on the crowd in 2025/26: 20,000 people (2025/26 edition). The fireworks, length: seven and a half minutes (2025/26 edition).
- London: the show on the Thames is ticketed only. Tickets in category A and B: €64.10, €46.60. Entry to the zones: 8:00–10:30 pm.
- Paris: the Champs-Élysées is free and needs no reservation. The 2025/26 programme: 23:50, ending 00:20. The Eiffel Tower itself has no fireworks.
- Amsterdam: Museumplein is the one organised public countdown in the centre, free and sized for up to 60,000 people in 2025/26. Hours: 2025/26 edition: children's programme from 19:00, live acts from 23:00, countdown from 23:50. Locals fire at Sloterplas (2025/26 edition: 00:00 to 00:10).
- Rome: the free concert at Circo Massimo is the main event (2025: 31 Dec from 9 pm, continuing past midnight). Firecrackers are banned: 2025/26: from 00.01 on 31 Dec to midnight on 6 Jan, fine €25–500.
- Barcelona: free on Avinguda Reina Maria Cristina at Montjuïc, with limited capacity and a 2025 programme: 2025: 11:50 pm–12:15 am. It is not held on Plaça de Catalunya or on La Rambla.
- Madrid: Puerta del Sol is free, and the Nochevieja crowd was capped and emptied in 2025 as follows: 31 Dec 2026 at midnight (rehearsal 30 Dec at midnight), 2025: 15,000 people, 2025: plaza cleared at 9pm, re-entry at 10pm.
- Lisbon: Terreiro do Paço is free, with fireworks at midnight for about ten minutes. Gates and closure in the 2025/26 edition: 19:30, 18:00. The stage was pop, hip-hop and reggaeton, and fado was not on it.
- Belgrade: in 2025/26 the only celebration was on the Sava promenade, free, from 20:00 to 00:30, with fireworks from the Beograd Tower and a drone show. Silvestrovo in the centre did not happen that year, and 2026/27 is unannounced.
- Zagreb: a free concert on Trg bana Jelačića, starting 19:30 (2025 edition) with the last act at 23:30 (2025 edition) (2025). Sources on 2025/26 say nothing of fireworks, and the city dropped its organised show after 2022/23.
- Ljubljana: four open-air programmes, with Kongresni trg the main one and entry free: 31 Dec 2026 – 1 Jan 2027, 21:00 to 02:30.
- Athens: Syntagma is free, with the programme at 2025: from 10pm, opened by the Athens Municipality Philharmonic and midnight at 2025: silent fireworks and a drone show at midnight. Alternatives are Pedion tou Areos (2025: concert by Eleni Foureira and ZAF, DJ Bobito before and after midnight) and the Stavros Niarchos centre (2025: midnight fireworks over Faliron, ice rink and park open until 2am).
- Brno: no city fireworks since 2017, so the year closes at the Cabbage Market, with a Silvestr programme in 2025 and the market running 13 Nov – 31 Dec 2026. The big display is the summer Ignis Brunensis.
- Dresden: no programme is published for 2026/27, and midnight is usually watched from the Elbe bridges and the riverbank. The Augustusmarkt keeps trading that night: until 2 am; closed 1 Jan 2027.
- Gdańsk: the city sets up no event in the centre, and the crowd gathers on Długi Targ with private fireworks. The 2025/26 concerts were away from the old town: Brzeźno pier at 10:00 pm, Wilanowski Jar at 10:50 pm (2025/26 edition).
- Graz: a free water-and-light show on Hauptplatz replaces fireworks, on 31 Dec 2026. Only the last block waits for midnight: from 5:30 pm to 12:20 am, five 20-minute shows (5:30, 7:30, 9:00, 10:30 pm and midnight).
- Leipzig: no city stage. People gather on Augustusplatz and the Markt, and the rockets belong to residents. The council voted for a free annual light show at one central site, from 2027.
- Lyon: no city fireworks announced and no big stage. The last light projection of the year fell on the walls of the Fourvière basilica: 2025: 31 December, 18:45–21:45.
- Nuremberg: no city fireworks, and private ones were banned in the old centre. The blue zone around the Kaiserburg ran from 9 pm 31 Dec to 2 am 1 Jan (2025/26); the red zone over the Hauptmarkt: all day from midnight 31 Dec to midnight 1 Jan (2025/26). The Silvesterkonzert in the Meistersingerhalle: 31 Dec 2026 at 6 pm.
- Sibiu: an open-air concert on Piața Mare, a light show and a countdown in 2025, with no fireworks confirmed by any source. The concert started at 9 pm (2025).
- Timișoara: the city organises the party on Piața Victoriei, and in 2025/26, when Cluj and other large cities dropped their fireworks, it launched them from the roundabout on Bulevardul Brătianu. Nothing is announced for 2026/27.
- Verona: Piazza Bra under the Arena, with live acts, a DJ set after midnight and fireworks at the last stroke of twelve. The stage hours on Bra, in the last edition: 9 pm to 1 am (2025/26 edition).
Want fireworks without a ticket? Choose Lisbon or Ljubljana, the only two on this list with a city show and free entry, and Lisbon's evidence is from 2025/26. Want company and noise without fireworks? Choose Vienna or Madrid. Want to be home without a taxi? Read the next section before booking anything.
Getting home after midnight
The gap in transport is wider than the gap in programmes, and every entry below belongs to the 2025/26 edition unless it says otherwise, because no city has published the 2026/27 timetable. In Athens and Amsterdam the last train goes before the party does, while in Paris and Budapest the metro keeps running through the night. London, Vienna and Berlin sit between those poles with closed stations and exceptions that matter more than the headline.
- Paris: lines 1, 2, 4, 6, 9 and 14 ran all night (1, 2, 4, 6, 9 and 14), public transport in Île-de-France was free (from 17:00 on 31 Dec to 12:00 on 1 Jan) and the stations around the Champs-Élysées closed early: 16:00.
- Budapest: all four metro lines and the HÉV ran through the night (all four metro lines (M1–M4) and all HÉV lines), with night buses and trams on top: trams 4, 6, 14, 47, 50 and 56A, trolleybuses 75 and 80, buses 5, 8E, 16 and 223E.
- Barcelona: the metro ran without a break (2025: non-stop from 5:00 am on 31 Dec to midnight on 1 Jan, 2025).
- Berlin: U-Bahn every 5 minutes until about 5 pm (except U4), then every 10 minutes, all night and S-Bahn the S41 and S42 ring lines every 10 minutes, most other lines every 20 minutes, all night. The U5 skipped Brandenburger Tor (from 4 pm) and trams did not cross Alexanderplatz: about 4:30 pm to 2 am.
- Rome: the metro ran late and night buses took over, though this comes from media reports and from no operator: 2025/26: metro until 2.30 am, night buses nMA, nMB, nMB1 and nMC from 2.30 to 8 am, 2025/26: most lines until 9 pm, a few until 2.30 am.
- Madrid: metro until 1:30 (6 am–1.30 am) with Sol closed, night buses from Cibeles (2025/26: 10.30pm–7am) and the first train on 1 January at 2025/26: 7am.
- Prague: the metro ran until two after midnight (up to two hours after midnight (2025/26)).
- Lisbon: the metro closed at 01:00 and the Terreiro do Paço station stayed shut (17:00). It was never an all-night service.
- Vienna: the metro ran as usual and many tram and bus lines ran all night (Wiener Linien, 2025). Stephansplatz and the Ring were closed: from 9 pm (2025/26 edition), from 7 pm (2025/26 edition).
- Athens: metro, trams and buses stopped before midnight (2025: line 1 from the terminals 10:20pm; lines 2 and 3 from Syntagma 11:03pm, 2025: between 9:30pm and 10:45pm, depending on the line, 2025: from 10pm, all back at depots by 11pm), so what is left is walking or a taxi.
- Amsterdam: public transport stopped at 20:00 and returned at 01:30 in 2025/26 (2025/26 edition: Centraal Station closed 20:00 to 01:00, night buses from 01:30). A night bus ran on top: €5.70.
- Belgrade: night lines started at 22:00, day lines ended at 22:00, and there is no metro.
- London: no free transport, and the Tube ran all night in 2025. The 2026 plan was still unpublished, and TfL is where it will appear.
- Brno: the centre is pedestrian, and on the night system 22 buses leave together from the main station (Brno Daily, 2025). No DPMB timetable for 2026 is published.
- Dresden: the Altstadt is small enough to walk, and a day ticket for the whole network costs €21.40.
- Gdańsk: special buses and trams ran to the concert venues in 2025/26, and the night service was tram N0 every 20 minutes from 11 pm to 4 am (2025/26 edition).
- Graz: trams 11, 14, 16 and 17 until 1 am, then night lines hourly until morning (2025/26 edition). The centre is pedestrian, so the last stretch from Hauptplatz is on foot.
- Leipzig: no night timetable was found, and the LVB, the city operator, is where it will appear.
- Lyon: metro 2025: lines A, B, C and D ran all night (adapted frequency); Pleine Lune night lines 2025: every 35 minutes between 0:45 and 5:00; funicular 2025/26: F2 ran until 5:00 on 1 January.
- Nuremberg: all VAG lines ran to the Saturday timetable on 31 December. The U1, U2 and U3 ran every 10 minutes all night (2025/26), and the NightLiner left from Hbf on the hour and half hour (2025/26).
For Zagreb, Ljubljana, Sibiu, Timișoara and Verona the sources do not publish the transport for that night, so none is promised here.
1 January
The first morning of the year is the worst day in Europe for museums, and the list of closed doors is longer than the list of open ones. In Madrid the Prado, the Thyssen and the Royal Palace stay shut (1 Jan, 1 May and 25 Dec, 1 and 6 Jan, 1 May and 25 Dec), and the Vatican Museums in Rome are closed as well (2025/26: closed on 1 Jan). The Acropolis in Athens is closed too (none (except holidays: Jan 1, Mar 25, May 1, Easter Sunday, Dec 25 and 26)). Vienna holds its New Year's concert (1 Jan 2027 at 11:15), and Berlin opens its museums (from noon). London has a parade (1 Jan 2027) and Winter Wonderland keeps its gates open (11:00–22:00, last entry 21:30). The Colosseum opens (2025/26: 1 Jan 8.30 am to 4.30 pm, last entry 3.30 pm), and Romans have a tradition of diving into the Tiber (1 Jan at noon, after the Janiculum cannon). Barcelona's Sagrada Família (1 Jan 9:00 am–2:00 pm) and the Palau de la Música (1 Jan 2027 at 9:00 pm (run 28 Dec – 9 Jan)) keep short hours, and Budapest's Basilica is open (11am–6pm). Athens runs reduced transport (2026: Sunday and public-holiday timetable). Prague treats the day as a holiday, with discounts only for locals (only for people who live in Prague or commute there daily, with proof (Lítačka card); at the ticket office only), and most of Zagreb and Belgrade stays shut.
Book the museum for 30 December or 2 January, since the closures above make 1 January the wrong day for them. Rome's big sites, the Palau and the Sagrada Família are better visited on one of those two dates.
1 January is just as slow in the cities added last. Poland and Austria treat it as a public holiday, so the European Solidarity Centre in Gdańsk is shut on 24–26 December, 1 January and 6 January, most shops in Graz are closed, and the Cabbage Market in Brno is closed too. In Dresden the Augustusmarkt closes while the Neumarkt reopens on 2 January, which makes the morning the time for the dome of the Frauenkirche (€12).
When to book
Vienna's hotels were almost all full for 2025/26 according to the chamber of commerce (vienna.at, 29 December 2025). In Amsterdam, parties and boats sell out by early December, and rooftops are booked earlier still. Budapest concert tickets go months ahead, and a boat costs €125 for the midnight cruise of 90 minutes or €70 for the early one. Berlin's MS Lexator party boat costs €79.99 with departure boarding 7:30 pm, departure 8 pm, back around 1 am, jetty at Uber Arena (Mühlenstraße 70–71), and London tickets go through Ticketmaster. In Belgrade the location changes from year to year, with the square and the Sava in 2024/25 and the Sava alone in 2025/26, so a room should wait for the programme. In Leipzig tables in the Panorama Tower are booked far in advance, in Lyon a dinner with a show is best reserved ahead, and Verona's Concerto di San Silvestro sells through arena.it.
Pick the night before the city: Lisbon or Ljubljana for a free show, Madrid or Budapest for a night with no fireworks and a boat.

Check the same room on both sites: price and cancellation terms can differ.
Austria, in brief
What now
If this sounds like your trip, start here.

Vienna
→A city that turned sitting in a coffee house into protected heritage

Vienna in 3 days
→The Ring, one large museum a day and Schönbrunn, three days that respect how much time Vienna wants per stop.

Day trips from Vienna
→The Wachau runs by train and boat along the Danube, Bratislava runs straight there by train, and neither fits into half a day.

Where to stay in Vienna
→In Vienna the area is chosen by U-Bahn line: inside the Ring everything is on foot, Neubau sits closer to the nightlife, and Leopoldstadt is quieter and greener with a longer ride in.

What Vienna costs
→A day in Vienna per person, from a hostel, a sausage and a set lunch to a hotel, dinner in a Beisl and one big museum ticket.

The Vienna the six main sights don't cover
→The Lipizzaners train in the morning for less than they perform in the evening, the Opera can be watched standing up, and Hundertwasser has a whole museum away from the Ring.

What to eat in Vienna
→The schnitzel always hangs over the plate, Tafelspitz has a restaurant built around nothing else, and Kaiserschmarrn is almost always shared.

The best time to visit Vienna
→Vienna is a central European city where December is a reason to come rather than an obstacle.

Getting around Vienna
→Vienna's airport has two train options into town, and one ticket after that covers the metro and the tram equally.

Mistakes everyone makes in Vienna
→Two museums in one day, an unprepared Sunday and a ticket bought from someone in a wig, mistakes that cost both time and money here.

Austria
→A country where the train from a Vienna coffee house to a Tyrolean cable car takes just over four hours — so you choose the order, not the country

New Year's Eve in Vienna: Silvesterpfad, midnight waltz and plan B
