In brief

The Advent market on Altmarkt gets the attention, yet the city lists ten, from medieval craftsmen in the Stallhof to white pagodas in Neustadt. The 2026 dates are out, so what remains is the choice and the order of the evening.

Striezelmarkt is not the only Christmas market in Dresden, and treating it as the whole story is the first mistake. The city names ten, each on its own square with its own idea of what December should look like. Even the title of oldest in Germany is contested: Dresden dates its market to 1434, when a one-day meat market was allowed on the day before Christmas Eve, while Bautzen points to 1384. In 2015 the Record Institute for Germany settled it by giving each one a title, Dresden as the oldest confirmed by charter and Bautzen as the oldest mentioned in a chronicle.

Which markets there are and how they differ

A first visit works best if you think in two groups. Altmarkt is the big one that draws the crowds and costs nothing to enter, while the others are smaller and each has a theme of its own: crafts, the Middle Ages, food from abroad, après-ski. Five of them deserve a closer look, and the rest fit into the paragraph on what else the city offers.

  • Dresdner Striezelmarkt, on Altmarkt opposite the Kulturpalast and in the shadow of the Kreuzkirche: more than 200 traders, a stepped pyramid of over 14 metres, what the market describes as the largest walk-through Schwibbogen in the world, and free admission. Runs 25 Nov – 24 Dec 2026
  • Advent auf dem Neumarkt, right beside the Frauenkirche: a nineteenth-century setting where bell founders, sign painters, clockmakers and chocolate makers work in public, and one of the few that keeps trading after Christmas. Runs 25 Nov – 23 Dec 2026 (and 27 Dec – 3 Jan 2027)
  • Weihnachtsmarkt an der Frauenkirche, on Münzgasse between the church and the Brühlsche Terrasse: pottery, glass, Vogtland lace, an eight-metre pyramid with hand-carved figures and Father Christmas every day from 4 pm. It is a different market from Neumarkt, though they share the church. Runs 25 Nov – 24 Dec 2026
  • Mittelalterweihnacht im Stallhof, in the courtyard of the Residenzschloss: medieval craftsmen, jugglers, musicians and spiced mead. Runs 25 Nov – 23 Dec 2026 (Rauhnächte 27–30 Dec and 2–6 Jan 2027)
  • Augustusmarkt, in Neustadt along Hauptstraße from the Golden Rider towards Gomondai-Platz: white and gold pagodas that recall the 1730 camp at Zeithain of Augustus the Strong, a tree lit in blue and traders from abroad selling Danish glögg, Finnish gingerbread, Italian pandoro and Alsatian bredele. Runs 25 Nov 2026 – 3 Jan 2027

When they open in 2026

Advent in Dresden starts early: the lights of Striezelmarkt are tested on 20 November 2026, five days before the market opens, and anyone can stand and watch. All five markets above open on 25 November, and Neumarkt, the Stallhof and Augustusmarkt carry on into the new year. Striezelmarkt keeps its own hours: opening 25 Nov 16:00–21:00; 26 Nov – 23 Dec daily 10:00–21:00; 24 Dec 10:00–14:00. Its 2026 programme has three dates worth planning around, the Stollenfest on 5 December, the Pyramidenfest on 12 December and the Pflaumentoffelfest on 19 December. At the Stollenfest in 2025 a procession of about 500 people walked from the Kulturpalast to the Frauenkirche and a giant stollen was cut at noon. Shops stay closed on Sundays except 29 November and 13 December 2026, when they open from noon to 6 pm, so those two Sundays put more people on the streets.

What to eat and drink, and the mug deposit

At a holiday market this old the food has rules, and the first one concerns the mug. Hot drinks with alcohol come in a mug, the deposit last season was €5, and mulled wine cost €4.50–5. No 2026 prices are out yet. The mugs go into one shared system and are washed centrally at the Kreuzkirche, about 760,000 of them last year, because traders may not wash them themselves, and a limited collector's edition called the Original Dresdner Striezeltasse has existed since 2017 for anyone who would rather keep theirs. The food follows the Saxon calendar: Dresdner Christstollen, Pulsnitzer Pfefferkuchen, glazed apples and Kräppelchen. Striezel is the old word for stollen, which explains the name of the whole market. Its mascot is the Pflaumentoffel, a little figure made of dried plums that is edible and meant to bring luck, and a symbol of the market since Ludwig Richter's woodcut of 1853.

One evening, in order

Arrive from the Hauptbahnhof along Prager Straße, where the 15 m tree of the Winterlichter is lit every evening (25 Nov – 23 Dec 2026), and Altmarkt is at the end of it. The dome of the Frauenkirche costs €12 and closes at 4 pm from November to February, so it belongs to the daytime and not to the evening. After the stalls on Altmarkt walk to Neumarkt and Münzgasse beside the church, then on to the Stallhof and Taschenberg, with the Fürstenzug around the corner. Cross the Elbe last and finish at Augustusmarkt on Hauptstraße, where you can stand with a mug under the pagodas. That order is a suggestion drawn from the map, not an official route.

Crowds and getting there

The festival weekends of the programme drew tens of thousands in 2025, so a weekday evening is the calmer choice. The city advises public transport and no car in the centre, and it runs Park+Ride sites on the edge of town. The tram stop for Altmarkt is called Altmarkt. A day ticket for the city zone costs €9.50, and a single ticket for the city zone costs €3.60.

What else the city offers in Advent

Beyond the five, Hüttenzauber on Ostra-Allee works as the winter market for a younger crowd, with après-ski huts and a curling lane, and it runs into the new year: 13 Nov 2026 – 2 Jan 2027. The Romantischer Weihnachtsmarkt on Taschenberg is the quieter alternative, as the city itself puts it: 27 Nov – 24 Dec 2026. Finn Village sells flammlachs and glögi: 26 Nov – 22 Dec 2026. In Loschwitz the Elbhangfest market on Körnerplatz, near the Blue Wonder, is the local tip: 5–20 Dec 2026. Christmas Garden in Pillnitz is a park that opens at dusk: 19 Nov 2026 – 10 Jan 2027. Anyone arriving after Christmas will find Augustusmarkt open until early January, closed from 24 to 26 December and on 1 January, and until 2 am on New Year's Eve.

Three tickets for the hours between stalls

An evening at Striezelmarkt runs on mulled wine and cold hands, so it helps to book one warm hour before or after it. Pick the tour if you like a story with your architecture, the gallery if you would rather stand in front of paintings, and the panorama if you want one huge picture that needs no reading. Each has its own closing day, so settle the weekday first and the evening second.

  • Semperoper highlight tour walks you through the opera house with a guide, taking in its architecture, history and quirks, and it runs almost every day. Ticket: €16
  • Zwinger holds the Old Masters Picture Gallery and three more collections under a single ticket: €18. The gallery is open 10:00–17:00, closed Mondays
  • Panometer Dresden shows its panorama in the round, and since late March 2026 the subject has been the Great Barrier Reef. Ticket: €16
