Debrecen's Christmas market is a citywide Advent with its centre on Kossuth tér, where an ice rink and ten thousand lights share the square. This page describes the 2025 edition and what is known about 2026.
Debrecen is not a city that skips Advent. In 2025 the programme ran through the whole centre, with a Debreceni Advent at its heart on Kossuth tér, a rink under the lights and trams that were lit up for the season. It is a Christmas market built around a square and a street rather than a field of huts, and it suits an unhurried evening.
Debreceni Advent on Kossuth tér
Kossuth tér is where the Advent market gathered. In 2025 it was hung with 10,000 lights, and a silver fir 14 m tall stood in the middle. The programme was spread across the whole city, but everything turned around this square. So arrive after dark, when the lights show best, and leave the rest of the evening for the rink. The 2026 dates have not been officially announced.
The rink and the Advent Bridge
The rink on Kossuth tér measures 800 m², so the square and the ice are seen in one view. That makes it the natural second stop after the lights, not a separate trip. The 2025 edition added the Advent Bridge, an illuminated bridge that stood over the ice like a gate, and even those who do not skate have a reason to stop at the rail. The 2025 edition also held the Ice Flower Carnival, with a demonstration of ice sculptures on Kossuth tér by day, a parade from Szent Anna utca through Piac utca to the square and a skating disco in the evening. Nothing about the 2026 programme is known yet.
Lit trams and concerts
In Advent the DKV runs lit trams, and in 2025 a special Advent tram of the FVV set off from Nagyállomás. It is the easiest way to see the season without a long walk in the cold, since it rides through the city instead of making you cross it on foot. For an evening under a roof there is the Kölcsey Center, which in 2025 offered more than 20 concerts, exhibitions and holiday programmes.
- Kossuth tér after dark: 10,000 lights and a 14 m fir
- An 800 m² rink with the Advent Bridge
- Lit DKV trams and a special FVV Advent tram from Nagyállomás
- The Kölcsey Center for concerts and exhibitions when it is cold outside
The 2026 dates have not been announced, so the programme is worth waiting for (latest edition — 2025: 29 Nov – 23 Dec). For one evening, choose Kossuth tér after dark: the lights, the fir and the rink are in one place.

Hungary, in brief
What now
If this sounds like your trip, start here.

Debrecen
→Hungary's second city and the seat of Hungarian Calvinism: a great church where independence was proclaimed in 1849, the main street leading up to it, and a forest with thermal baths to the north.

Debrecen in 2 days
→Day one follows Piac utca from the station to the Great Church, the College and the Déri Museum, and day two rides the tram out to Nagyerdő, for the zoo and the baths.

Day trips from Debrecen
→Hajdúszoboszló is the nearest, Hortobágy next and Tokaj the farthest: all three are reached by train and each takes a full day.

Where to stay in Debrecen
→Debrecen splits into a centre you cover in a day and a park with thermal baths reached by tram.

What Debrecen costs
→In Debrecen the bill is not driven by the museums but by two items: the thermal bath and the zoo, and lodging starts at three-star hotels since there is no hostel.

The best time to visit Debrecen
→Debrecen is a lowland city with a continental climate; the forest and the day trips want spring or early autumn, while the centre is a walk in any season.

Getting around Debrecen
→From the airport the Airport 1 bus runs to the station and from Budapest a direct train, while in town almost everything is on foot and tram 1 links the station, the centre and the forest.

Hungary
→A capital on the Danube, a hill-country wine town, a southern city near Croatia and Central Europe's biggest lake, all in a country without the euro
