Where to stay in Debrecen
Debrecen splits into a centre you cover in a day and a park with thermal baths reached by tram. This page says which one to sleep in, and when the quiet residential side or the airport makes sense.
- First visit
- The centre by Piac utca
- Baths and zoo
- Nagyerdő, tram 1 to the centre
- Quieter
- Homokkert

The centre fits into one day on foot, and the second day goes to Nagyerdő, the big park north of it, on the same tram line. So the choice of base is simple: sleep in the centre unless the baths and the zoo are the reason you came. Homokkert and the airport zone are for particular situations, and they are described below.
The centre, by Piac utca
Piac utca runs through the middle of the old town toward the Great Church, and tram 1 passes along it on its way between the main station, Nagyállomás, and the park. The pedestrian streets, the squares, the shops and the evening bars are all here, and the main station and the bus stations lie in or close to the centre, so you step out of the train and walk to the room. This is the base for a first visit and for anyone without a car. It is the wrong one for a traveller who wants trees and silence outside the window.

Nagyerdő, the forest with the baths
Nagyerdő is a large park of paths and sports grounds, home to the zoo, an amusement park and the Aquaticum thermal baths. The Aquaticum hotel, a four-star, stands in the middle of the forest above the baths themselves. Tram 1 runs from the centre to the Egyetem stop in the park. Families and anyone planning a long soak will like it here. If you want to eat dinner in the old town every evening, the tram ride each way will start to feel like a toll.

Homokkert, quieter and cheaper
Homokkert is a residential district with local markets, greenery and a small lake, and the centre is a walk or a short ride away. Choose it for a stay of several days when you want a calm base. For one night it is not worth the trouble.

By the airport
This is not a district for looking around. It makes sense only if your flight leaves early, because the Airport 1 bus reaches Nagyállomás in 11 min to Nagyállomás. Sleep here for the flight and spend your evenings elsewhere.

What a night costs
As a frame for planning, a night in a three-star room comes to about €45 per person in a double room. Getting around adds a little: a single tram or bus ride is €1.32–1.38, and the 24-hour ticket is €4.69.

What Debrecen costs
→In Debrecen the bill is not driven by the museums but by two items: the thermal bath and the zoo, and lodging starts at three-star hotels since there is no hostel.

→A town that held its fortress against the Ottomans in 1552, then handed over the keys 44 years later, so a neoclassical basilica and an Ottoman minaret now share one skyline.

Before you go
Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.
Where should a first-time visitor stay in Debrecen?
In the centre, near Piac utca. The Great Church and the museums are within a walk, and tram 1 takes you to Nagyerdő when you want the park.
Is Nagyerdő a good base?
Yes, if the baths and the zoo are the point of the trip. If you want evenings in the old town, you will be riding tram 1 back and forth.
Do you need to stay near the airport?
Only for an early flight. The Airport 1 bus runs to Nagyállomás in 11 min to Nagyállomás, so for anything later the centre is the better place to sleep.
