Eger
A town that held its fortress against the Ottomans in 1552, then handed over the keys anyway 44 years later — so a baroque basilica and a minaret now share the same skyline.

Eger fits into a single day if the plan is the castle and the basilica, or two if Szépasszony-völgy, the wine-cellar valley behind Egri Bikavér, gets added. The town held its fortress in 1552 against an Ottoman army several times its size under captain István Dobó, then fell in a second siege in 1596 and stayed under Ottoman rule until 1687 — the reason a minaret is the only trace that rule left standing.
The centre is compact and walkable: it's roughly a ten-minute walk from the castle to the basilica, and Szépasszony-völgy starts right where the streets end, against a hillside covered in vineyards. The best time to come, Apr–Jun · Sep–Oct, also lines up with the grape harvest.
The town has no airport of its own — the way in runs through Budapest, on a mix of bus and train. That makes Eger an easier add-on to a trip through the Hungarian capital than a stand-alone destination with a direct flight.

What to see in Eger

Eger Castle
The fortress above the town held off a far larger Ottoman army in 1552, defended by a small Hungarian garrison under Captain István Dobó — a siege that has been part of Hungarian history lessons ever since. The town fell anyway in a second siege in 1596 and stayed under Ottoman rule until 1687. A museum inside now covers both events; entry €13.25 (€7.73 reduced), no booking needed.

The Lyceum
A former 18th-century seminary founded by Bishop Esterházy hides a rooftop camera obscura that projects a live image of the town, plus an astronomical tower holding older instruments; downstairs is a library under a painted ceiling. Entry €9.93 (€4.97 reduced), booking recommended; a visit takes 45–60 min, closed Monday.

The Basilica
Hungary's second-largest church, built in the first half of the 19th century to a design by the architect József Hild, in a neoclassical style that stands out against the baroque centre around it. Visiting the nave and crypt together takes 30–45 min; nave entry €4.14 (hours: see source — timed guided visits).

Valley of the Beautiful Woman
A valley of wine cellars cut into the hillside, a short walk from the centre, where Egri Bikavér is poured — a blend of red grapes whose name, legend says, ties back to that same siege: the wine left dark stains on soldiers' faces and clothes that looked like blood. Entry to the valley free; tastings are paid per cellar. Working through a few cellars takes 1–2 h.
free · 1–2 h

Thermal Bath
A thermal complex on the edge of the centre, with outdoor and indoor pools. A full-day adult ticket is €12.69; a visit usually takes half a day.
