Trenčín takes 1 day: the compact centre below the fortress is a morning's walk, the castle on its rock above the Váh takes up most of the day, and Trenčianske Teplice, a spa town half an hour away by bus, fits as an afternoon add-on. The hub for getting in is Bratislava (main station / BTS airport), by direct train (ZSSK / RegioJet).
The train from Bratislava reaches Trenčín station, direct train (ZSSK / RegioJet), tickets from €6.06 (2nd class, standard fare). From the station, the centre is a walk away, straight towards the main square below the castle.
Mierové námestie is the main square, open and free at any hour. On it stands Hotel Elizabeth, through whose second-floor glass wall — not from the street — you see a Roman inscription cut into the castle rock in the year 179, a memory of the legion garrison that wintered here, the oldest written trace of the city's name.
From the square you climb to the City Tower, built in the 16th century as part of the town's fortifications. Entry to the top is €2, open May–Sep 10:00–18:00; Feb–Apr & Oct–Nov 11:00–17:00, closed January. A few steps further stands the Piarist Church of St Francis Xavier, free to enter.
Before the last climb, it's worth stepping into the Katov dom, the former house of the town's headsman, which now holds part of the museum's collection — a ticket is €10 (combined ticket with the castle), closed off-season (Nov–Mar).
The castle itself stands on a rock above the town, first mentioned in the 11th century. A ticket for the self-guided circuit (Malý okruh) is €10 (self-guided circuit) / €12 (guided circuit), open daily 9:00–18:30 (winter season to 15:30). The Well of Love, a 70-metre shaft cut into the rock that, legend says, a Turkish prisoner named Omar dug for his freedom and the hand of Fatima, a servant girl at the castle, is reached only on the guided circuit (Veľký okruh): no (self-guided); timed slots for the guided tour (groups up to 50, weekdays 11-12-14-15-16).
From the castle the way leads down to the Váh, where the Ostrov has a natural river beach, free to enter. Anyone with an afternoon to spare can take the bus to Trenčianske Teplice, a spa town with a park and the 1930s Zelená žaba bathhouse; walking through the park and the centre is free, free (walk through the spa park and centre).
