The Tatras are Poland's only alpine range and fit into some sixty kilometres of the Slovak border, so everything is close and everything is crowded. Zakopane is the base: three days means one for Morskie Oko, one for a ridge, and one for the town when it rains.
Morskie Oko is a lake at the end of nine kilometres of asphalt road closed to traffic — two hours uphill on foot, or a horse cart for a fee. You enter the national park, admission €2.50. The bus from Zakopane is more reliable than a car, because the car park below the trail has a limited number of spaces.

Giewont is the mountain visible from every street in town, with a fifteen-metre cross on top, put up in 1901. The climb takes four to five hours and the last stretch goes up chains bolted into rock. This is not a walk: in bad weather it is dangerous, and lightning on that ridge makes the news most years.
In season the town turns into a fairground — Krupówki is a street of souvenirs, grilled oscypek cheese and music from every doorway. What is worth seeing is off it: the wooden Zakopane Style architecture devised by Stanisław Witkiewicz in the late nineteenth century, and the old Pęksowy Brzyzek cemetery with its carved wooden markers.

Two things you probably did not know
The Zakopane style was devised by Stanislaw Witkiewicz at the end of the nineteenth century, joining local timber building with art nouveau. It was meant as a Polish national style at a time when Poland did not exist as a state.
The Tatras are the only genuinely alpine range between the Alps and the Caucasus, with peaks over two and a half thousand metres. They cover just seven hundred square kilometres, so they can be crossed in a few days on foot.
