Zakopane in 3 days
Day one is Morskie Oko, day two the Giewont ridge, day three the town — for resting your legs or for the rain.
- How long
- 3 days

Day one goes to Morskie Oko, since that trip takes the longest and works best early, while the car park below is still empty. Day two is the Giewont ridge, weather permitting; if not, it swaps places with day three. Day three stays in town, among the Zakopane Style houses and the old cemetery, where rain spoils nothing.
Morskie Oko
Bus to Palenica Białczańska. Leave early, while the car park below is still empty; the Tatra National Park no longer sells the entry ticket on the bus, €2.51 is paid straight to the driver.
The closed road to the lake. Nine kilometres of asphalt with no traffic, 2 h uphill on foot, or a horse cart for a fee if you would rather not climb.
Morskie Oko. A glacial lake ringed by peaks, with no charge beyond the park entry. Booking: no.
Back down the same road, faster than the climb up. Stay longer and you count on a later bus — the last ones leave in the afternoon.

The Giewont ridge
An early start towards Kuźnice. The trail to Giewont begins there; the winter section via the Grzybowiec Pass is shut 1 Dec–15 May (winter section via Grzybowiec Pass).
The climb. 4–5 h, the last stretch on chains bolted into the rock. Park entry is €2.51. Booking: no.
The descent. If clouds build in the afternoon, leave the ridge straight away — lightning up there makes the news most years.
Back in town, a shower and a rest before dinner.
Swap the ridge for the cable car. Kasprowy Wierch is a 15 min ride and gives the view without the chains; booking is recommended.

The town
Villa Koliba, the Museum of Zakopane Style. Mon/Wed/Thu/Sun 9–17, Fri/Sat 11–19; entry €5.71, closed Tuesday.
Pęksowy Brzyzek. The old cemetery with carved wooden markers, daily 8–17, entry €0.68.
Lunch. A set menu at €6.39, or grilled oscypek at €6.16 from a kiosk.
Krupówki. The main street of souvenirs and music — half an hour is enough to see it, and the rest of the afternoon goes elsewhere.
Villa Koliba is shut that day. Swap it for Pęksowy Brzyzek in the morning and leave the museum for the next day, or spend longer outdoors, in Strążyska Valley near the centre.
What to drop when you are running late
- Late start for Morskie Oko? Buses run more than once, but the car park below fills by seven — you take the bus either way, not a car.
- Clouds over the ridge before noon? Swap Giewont with day three and go into town instead; save the ridge for the next morning.

Before you go
Short answers to what people ask most before setting out.
What if I only have two days?
Drop day three (the town) and keep the lake and the ridge. Zakopane Style and the cemetery are short and fit easily into an afternoon after coming down from Giewont.
What if the weather on the ridge is bad?
Giewont and day three (the town) swap, or the ridge is replaced with the Kasprowy Wierch cable car, which gives the view without the chains.
Does anything need booking ahead?
A ticket for the Kasprowy Wierch cable car, if it is part of the plan — the daily number of tickets is capped.
