Kitzbühel is a small town of painted sixteenth-century houses that the world knows for something else: the Streif on the Hahnenkamm, the downhill run raced every January and rated the hardest on the World Cup circuit. For those few days the town has more visitors than residents.

Outside January this is a quiet place with a main street you walk in ten minutes and one of Austria's larger ski areas above it. In summer the same lifts serve hikers and bikes, and the Hahnenkamm can be walked — the path runs right beside the one racers reach over 150 kilometres an hour on in January.

It is also the most expensive corner of Tyrol, and you feel it in the price of a room and a meal. If you came for the mountain rather than the name, neighbouring towns — Kirchberg or St Johann — cost less, and the lifts are the same or share a pass.

    €6 · half a day

  • The Kitzbüheler Horn

  • The Kitzbühel museum

The town museum in an old granary, with a room on the history of skiing. This is where the 1893 story is told.

    €9 · 1 h · closed Sunday, Monday

  • Kirchberg

The neighbouring village a few kilometres away, on the same lift pass. Cheaper to sleep in, and the mountain is the same.

History

The Streif at Kitzbuhel is the hardest downhill in the World Cup. The Mausefalle starts on an 85 per cent gradient with a jump of some eighty metres, and the fastest racers reach 140 kilometres an hour.

Science

Before skiing Kitzbuhel lived off copper and silver mines worked since the Bronze Age. The first pair of skis arrived in 1892 with Franz Reisch, copying a Norwegian design, and he came down from the Kitzbuheler Horn on them.
