The city's name means salt fortress, and that is an explanation rather than an ornament: salt from the mines around it paid for centuries for everything you see here, including the Hohensalzburg fortress above the town — one of the largest castle complexes in central Europe.
The old town is squeezed between the Salzach and the hill and takes half a day: Getreidegasse with its wrought-iron signs, Mozart's birthplace, the cathedral and the Mirabell gardens. The fortress is reached by funicular or on foot; on foot is twenty minutes uphill and gets you the same thing for less money.

Salzburg works better as a base than as a single stop. Hallstatt is an hour and a half away, the Salzkammergut lakes under an hour, and Berchtesgaden across the German border about the same. Plan only the city and you will have half a day spare; plan the city and one lake and it fits.

Getreidegasse
A narrow trading street with wrought-iron signs above the doors — each one a trade, from when people could not read. Number 9 is Mozart's birthplace.

The Mirabell gardens
A baroque garden with a fountain and the fortress behind it. Free to enter and best early in the morning.

Two things you probably did not know
Salzburg means salt fortress. The city grew rich on the salt mines around it, and the archbishops built the baroque centre with that money. By weight, salt was worth more than silver for centuries.
The Sound of Music is one of the most watched films ever in America and almost unknown in Austria. It was not shown on Austrian television until 2020, so the location tours are taken almost entirely by foreigners.
