In brief

Salzburg keeps going after Christmas, and its New Year's Eve party fills Kapitelplatz under the fortress, with the Christmas market still serving a few steps away. This guide covers the hours, the buses and a seat indoors if the cold wins.

A common story says Salzburg shuts down once Christmas is over and the market has been packed away. The calendar for 31 December 2026 says otherwise, because the Christkindlmarkt keeps its stalls open, Kapitelplatz hosts a full day of music, and the NYE countdown happens in the shadow of Hohensalzburg. Locals call the night Silvester, and the official name of the event is Altstadtsilvester & Neujahr. The programme for 2026 is already published, while bus times and road closures below come from the 2025/26 edition.

Where the city celebrates: Altstadtsilvester at Kapitelplatz

Kapitelplatz is the square with the golden sphere, directly beneath the fortress, and it carries the whole programme. Entry to all celebrations was free in 2025/26, and the organisers describe the square as free of food and sales stands, so a scene for regional artists fills the space instead. The dates for this year: 31 Dec 2026 from 2 pm to 1 am; 1 Jan 2027 from 11 am to 6 pm.

  • The programme, hour by hour: 2 pm fireworks from Sydney on screen, 3:45 pm children's fireworks, 4 pm salute from the fortress, 6 pm bells, midnight fireworks set to music.
  • Live music comes from the Musikum Big Band and the Lungau Big Band, plus a salsa slot and the singer Robert Rias.
  • There are no stalls on the square. Food and drink are at the Christkindlmarkt below the Cathedral, a short walk away.
  • Market hours on both days: 31 Dec from 10 am (goods stalls until at least 6 pm, food and drink until 1 am); 1 Jan 11 am to 6 pm.

When to arrive

The programme starts at 2 pm, and that is the best time to come if the aim is a place near the stage. The square is open-air, so a late arrival simply joins the back of the crowd. The cold is the real limit, which is why an afternoon on the market stalls followed by the square after dark works better than standing on the cobbles from the first hour. The bells ring at 6 pm, which makes a natural cue to cross from the stalls to the square.

Getting around that night

Salzburg has no metro, so the night ends on foot or by bus. The last edition worked like this: 2025/26: Saturday timetable until about 10:45 pm, then a special timetable with split lines until 4:30 am on 1 Jan; most lines had no night service. The main river crossing was shut to cars and buses late in the evening: 2025/26: closed to traffic and public transport from 11 pm. The timetable for 2026/27 had not been released, so read the Salzburg AG notice before the evening. Anyone who wanted a view from above had a Gaisberg bus, which went up to the summit: 2025/26: from 8 pm every 20 min from Mirabellplatz, last trip down at 2:35 am; road closed to cars from Zistel from 8 pm.

Midnight

Bells and fireworks

At midnight the bells of Salzburg Cathedral ring in the new year. The official description places the fireworks at the Hohensalzburg fortress, set to music that Radio Antenne Salzburg broadcasts. Private pyrotechnics are banned across the whole city, rockets and fountains included, and the authorities do not allow sales on public ground. Salzburg fireworks therefore means one organised display, with the old town as the audience.

Plan B

A seat instead of a square

Anyone who prefers a chair to a cobbled square has three options that the official listings name. The one with the setting is a Mozart concert in the Burgsaal of the fortress itself, where the seller includes the funicular ride up. The listing says: 31 Dec 2026, Burgsaal, Mozart Chamber Orchestra Salzburg (start time differs between sources). In town there is a gala with melodies from the 1920s and 1930s, played by the Ballaststoff Orchestra at SZENE Salzburg. The quietest evening is the Jahresschlussandacht, a year-end service in the Stiftskirche St. Peter.

1 January

The morning after is gentle, and the programme comes back at 11 am with a waltz for anyone still awake: 1 Jan 2027 at 11 am, with a dance team (a dance lesson for visitors at the 2025/26 edition). Kapitelplatz and the Christkindlmarkt stay open until 6 pm on the day, and Sternadvent in the Getreidegasse area runs on until 6 January: 19 Nov 2026 – 6 Jan 2027. That makes 1 January a proper day out and not a recovery day in a closed city.

Where to sleep

Salzburg Tourism lists hotel packages under the title New Year's Eve in Salzburg 2026, so ask for them before booking a standard room. The old town keeps Kapitelplatz within walking distance and the walk home short. More on districts is on the stays page.
