The main New Year's Eve party on Tenerife is free and held on Plaza de La Candelaria in Santa Cruz. This page also covers Puerto de la Cruz, the south coast, the tram home and what is open on 1 January.
Tenerife has a reputation for beach parties in shorts and fireworks over the Atlantic, and the sources for the last edition describe a different night. Nochevieja here means a square, an orchestra and twelve grapes eaten to the clock, with the crowd spread over several towns because the island has no single centre. Guides announce fireworks, yet the official 2025 announcement does not mention them, so the plan below stands without them. The programme for 2026/27 has not been published, and the city releases it in the last days of December, which is why every detail here describes the night of 2025/26.
Plaza de La Candelaria
Santa Cruz is the capital and the biggest party on the island. The main stage stands on Plaza de La Candelaria, and the grapes are eaten beside the clock of the Iglesia de la Concepción while RTVE broadcasts the chimes. The singers Nia and St. Pedro hosted the stage in 2025. Entry is open to everyone and costs nothing, but the city runs a special security operation, so expect a crowd and a slow walk in. Grapes at the chimes: at midnight Canary time, one hour after Madrid (2025/26 edition). The music had started earlier: from 11pm (listing; 2023: 11:30pm). After the grapes the square kept dancing: orchestras Maracaibo, Acapulco, Generasión and Revelación, a street dance until dawn (2025/26 edition).
The city calls its programme Fin de Año, Spaniards call the night Nochevieja, and the twelve chimes are the campanadas, one grape for each. The Canary Islands keep the clock one hour behind mainland Spain, so the countdown that Madrid watches reaches Santa Cruz an hour later. One trap with the name: Plaza de La Candelaria is a square in Santa Cruz, while Candelaria is a separate municipality that held its own party by the town hall from 11pm in 2025. Say the full name to the taxi driver and read the booking twice.
Choose Santa Cruz if you have one evening. The party is free and official, RTVE broadcasts the grapes, and line 1 of the tram brings you home. Puerto de la Cruz suits a calmer night, and the south suits anyone who wants to dance until dawn.
More squares than one
Outside the capital the island celebrates square by square, and the best choice follows the place where you sleep. El Médano and Los Abrigos, in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona, ran their own nights in 2025 from 10pm with orchestras and DJs. The four towns below were on the same 2025 list of public parties.
- Puerto de la Cruz, Plaza del Charco, a square of old trees on the quieter north coast, with orchestras and a DJ in 2025: 10pm to 6am (2025/26 edition)
- Los Cristianos, Plaza del Pescador, the south's long night: 10pm to 5:30am (2025/26 edition)
- La Laguna, Plaza del Cristo, with orchestras until the early hours of 1 January and tram line 1 running there.
- Icod de los Vinos, Plaza Andrés de Lorenzo Cáceres, a public party that starts at 0.30 after the grapes, for a small town and a small crowd.
Getting there and back
The tram is the answer for Santa Cruz. Line 1 on that night, in the last published edition: runs through the night every 15–20 minutes (2025/26 edition). The same line reaches La Laguna, so a night at Plaza del Cristo ends the same way. The TITSA buses run on a holiday timetable, and the lines for the night are listed on titsa.com. Taxis are hard to find after midnight, so do not plan the journey home around one.
In Granadilla de Abona the municipality made public transport free between its own towns on the night of 31 December and in the early hours of 1 January in 2025. That covers El Médano and Los Abrigos and nothing beyond them, so a ride to another part of the island still has a fare.
If a crowd is too much: the south and the hotels
Playa de las Américas and Costa Adeje offer a club and hotel night, and the 2025 sources list no public programme there. Tramps is the club the guides name, the beach terraces take bookings of their own, and the galas at the Hard Rock Hotel Tenerife and at Bahía del Duque sell their own tickets. A New Year cruise also sailed from Puerto Colón in Costa Adeje, and all of these set prices on their own.
Whatever you pick, dinner comes first. On 31 December shops close at noon and many restaurants serve only a fixed menu and ask for a reservation, so book the table before anything else. The order of the night is then simple: dinner, the square, the grapes at the chimes, and orchestras until dawn or the tram home.
New Year's Day
1 January is a full public holiday. Museums, offices and most shops are closed, while bars, restaurants and the island's natural places stay open. The beaches are the natural plan, and Las Teresitas, La Tejita, El Bollullo and Benijo were the ones named for the day. A few people swim in the sea in Puerto de la Cruz in the morning, and the air is mild enough to sit out for a long breakfast.
The Teide cable car published hours only until the end of 2026: 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, last ascent 4:00 pm, last descent 4:50 pm. Nothing is published for 1 January 2027, so keep the cable car for another day. The same goes for Loro Parque, the ferry to La Gomera, Masca, where a booking is required, and a boat trip to watch whales or dolphins from Los Cristianos or Puerto Colón: all of them are plans for 2 January onwards. Anyone staying until the end of the holiday week gets the Cabalgata de Reyes in Santa Cruz: 5 Jan at 7pm, from Avenida de Bélgica to Plaza de la Candelaria (2026 edition).
A ticket with a chosen time slot, booked ahead.
