The last Berlin party at the Brandenburg Gate needed a free ticket, so this guide sorts out the gate, the boats, the night transport, the firework rules and what opens on 1 January.
Most people assume New Year's Eve in Berlin means standing in the open at the Brandenburg Gate, and television makes it look that way. Last season the city ran the party itself, with room for 20,000 people (2025/26 edition), and nobody walked in without a ticket. The official event page, updated on 13 May 2026, lists no date for 2026/27 and says it is still unknown whether the party will happen at all. Every figure below describes the last edition and stays that way until the organisers publish the next one.
The party at the Brandenburg Gate
Kulturprojekte Berlin ran the Yeah 26 party on Pariser Platz and Straße des 17. Juni, and admission was free, but with a pre-booked ticket (2025/26 edition). The gates opened at 9:30 pm (2025/26 edition), the DJ set began at 10 pm (2025/26 edition), and at midnight the fireworks lasted seven and a half minutes (2025/26 edition). That is short for a night in the cold, so the evening itself is the waiting.
Carry the ticket and a photo ID, because both were checked at the entrance, and leave the backpack at the hotel. Large bags were banned, every bag was searched, and food, alcohol and fireworks stayed outside. Tickets were not sold at the door, since they had run out, and people came in from the Ebertstraße side. Watching from the Tiergarten does not survive the map either: Straße des 17. Juni was closed to vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists between the Großer Stern and the gate, and the Tiergarten was closed with it.

Getting there and getting home
- In 2025/26 the BVG kept the U-Bahn running all night. Intervals: every 5 minutes until about 5 pm (except U4), then every 10 minutes, all night.
- The U5 did not stop at Brandenburger Tor from 4 pm, so plan to get off elsewhere.
- Trams did not run through Alexanderplatz in the window of about 4:30 pm to 2 am.
- The S-Bahn: the S41 and S42 ring lines every 10 minutes, most other lines every 20 minutes, all night.
Take the gate only with a free ticket in hand, and grab it the day it appears. Without one, the better night is a boat or a dinner by the Spree, and Alexanderplatz with a bag of rockets is the place to skip.
A boat on the Spree
MS Lexator runs a New Year's Eve party boat on the Spree on 31 December 2026, with a DJ and a small buffet of potato salad with sausages, vegetarian pasta with pesto and Berliner pancakes. A glass of sparkling wine or juice comes with boarding and another at midnight, though all you can drink is not included. The standard ticket costs €79.99, sold through Eventim. Other operators sell party boats and dinner cruises as well, among them a boat from Hafen Treptow and a dinner by the Oberbaumbrücke, but this guide quotes no price for them. Times and jetty for the Lexator: boarding 7:30 pm, departure 8 pm, back around 1 am, jetty at Uber Arena (Mühlenstraße 70–71).
Where the fireworks go off, and where they cannot
Private fireworks were allowed only on 31 December and 1 January, and in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, Reinickendorf, Pankow and Marzahn-Hellersdorf only from 6 pm to 7 am on 1 January. Four zones were closed to them altogether: Alexanderplatz, the Steinmetzkiez in Schöneberg, a stretch of Sonnenallee in Neukölln with its side streets, and the Admiralbrücke in Kreuzberg with the streets around it. Sparklers and small firecrackers were still allowed there. For Berlin fireworks without the rockets, the WeihnachtsZauber market on Gendarmenmarkt stays open until the end of the year (23 Nov – 31 Dec 2026), and the market at the Gedächtniskirche on Breitscheidplatz carries on after Christmas (13 Nov 2026 – 1 Jan 2027).

What Berliners do at midnight
Silvester, as Berliners call 31 December after Saint Sylvester, starts for many in front of the television with Dinner for One, the black-and-white British sketch built around the line "The same procedure as every year". At midnight comes the Sekt, and with it the Pfannkuchen, the Berlin doughnuts, of which a few are filled with mustard as a joke. Some households still play Bleigießen, a fortune game with wax or tin. Supermarkets close early on 31 December, so finish the shopping by the 30th.
New Year's Day
Shops were shut on 1 January, a public holiday, and sleeping until noon is the local habit. The state museums opened from noon, so Museum Island is the easy plan once the morning is gone. The S-Bahn ran from about 9 am on the Sunday timetable, which is enough to get anywhere before the museums open.

If the gate ticket never appears, the Spree still has a boat with a DJ and a glass at midnight.
Check the same room on both sites: price and cancellation terms can differ.
Germany, in brief
What now
If this sounds like your trip, start here.

Berlin
→A city cut in half by a wall that fell in 1989, and which never made a secret of the scar

Berlin in 3 days
→Government, museums and the Wall in three days that don't overlap — with a Reichstag dome that costs nothing and one €24 ticket for all of Museum Island.

Day trips from Berlin
→Six day trips from Berlin, all by train: Sanssouci in half an hour for €5, the camp at Oranienburg with no admission, and a lake you reach on an ordinary city ticket.
