A plan for 31 December and 1 January in Munich: the Tollwood party that needs a ticket, the streets where rockets are banned, the hills and bridges to watch from, the night U-Bahn and what is open on New Year's Day.
Marienplatz is the wrong answer to the question of where Munich celebrates. On Silvester, as Germans call 31 December, the pedestrian zone around it bans fireworks for hours, and the city itself points to hills and bridges for the view. New Year's Eve in Munich comes down to a ticket or a vantage point. Tollwood has published its party for 2026, while the Silvestermeile on Ludwigstraße has not been confirmed for 2026/27.
The party with a ticket
The Tollwood Silvesterparty fills the Theresienwiese, reached by the U4 or U5 to the station of the same name, and the date is published: 31 Dec 2026, from 7 pm (no fixed end time). The programme has a clear midnight, because at twelve the Mitternachtswalzer, a traditional waltz, begins. The festival grounds and the Markt der Ideen are free to enter, and a ticket covers only the Grand Chapiteau and the party. Since the party needs one, buy it in advance.
The Silvestermeile is the street party on Ludwigstraße, from the Siegestor to Schellingstraße. In the 2025/26 edition it had four stages, at the Siegestor, Geschwister-Scholl-Platz, Professor-Huber-Platz and the Ludwigskirche. Times: 2025: entry from 7 pm, end at 1.30 am. At midnight it used laser, light and video mapping instead of fireworks, and pyrotechnics were banned on the ground. A ticket for that edition cost: €40 (2025/26 edition). The nearest U-Bahn stops were Giselastraße and Odeonsplatz. The event's own website says it is over and that further dates cannot be guaranteed, so 2026/27 stays open.
Where fireworks are banned
Munich has no city fireworks show, only private rockets, so the rules decide where you may fire one. The pedestrian zone around Marienplatz, Rindermarkt, Kaufingerstraße and Neuhauser Straße as far as Karlsplatz (Stachus), with part of the Viktualienmarkt, bans pyrotechnics at these hours: 2025/26: from 9 pm on 31 Dec to 2 am on 1 Jan. Sparklers and small crackers are allowed there. Inside the Mittlerer Ring, bangers with no effect but noise were banned for all of 31 December and 1 January, while rockets, batteries and fountains stayed legal. The Tierpark Hellabrunn got a ban zone of its own, and the palace administration asks visitors not to shoot in the Englischer Garten, above all near the Chinesischer Turm and the Japanisches Teehaus, because of fire. The penalty is a fine. The city explains the old-town ban with the crowd, since up to 20,000 people had gathered there spontaneously.
Buy the Tollwood ticket if you want a party until midnight and beyond. If you do not, take the Olympiaberg or one of the Isar bridges, and keep the rockets out of the Altstadt.
Where to watch it from
The city's own list gives the Olympiaberg in Olympiapark the best view, and most people ride the U3 and walk the rest. The Olympiaturm was closed on 31 December 2025. The Isar bridges are popular and often full, from the Corneliusbrücke and Reichenbachbrücke to the Wittelsbacherbrücke, Maximiliansbrücke, Luitpoldbrücke and Kabelsteg. The Friedensengel and a viewpoint in Bogenhausen work if you arrive early, the Monopteros in the Englischer Garten is romantic and crowded, and photographers choose the Hackerbrücke and Donnersbergerbrücke for the view over the rail tracks. For something quieter the list names the Fröttmaninger Berg near the Allianz Arena, and the Luitpoldhügel, 37 m high, where some of the paths are unlit. Several city tours also run on 31 December, from a night watchman to a beer tour, and their tickets go through München Ticket.

Getting around that night
- U-Bahn: 2025/26: runs all night; every 10 minutes until about 1 am, every 20 until about 2 am, then the night network every 30
- NachtBus and NachtTram also ran all night in 2025/26, every 30 minutes.
- A day ticket costs €10.10, which beats three single rides.
- One single ride in zone M costs €4.20.
What is still open after Christmas
The Christmas market on Marienplatz runs 20 Nov – 24 Dec 2026, so it is not there on 31 December. The Winterzauber on the Viktualienmarkt keeps going: until 5 Jan 2027; 31 Dec 10 am to 8 pm. The Tollwood Winterfestival on the Theresienwiese runs 24 Nov – 23 Dec 2026, and the Silvesterparty is a separate evening.

New Year's Day
The zoo at Hellabrunn is open over the turn of the year, according to the city's 2026/27 listing, and the ice rinks at the Prinzregentenstadion and the Eis- und Funsportzentrum West and Ost run around the same time. The city saunas open on 1 January from noon to 8 pm. The Deutsches Museum publishes closures for both days: daily 9 am–5 pm, last entry 4:30 pm; closed 1 Nov, 24, 25 and 31 Dec 2026 and 1 Jan 2027. Neuschwanstein follows its published hours: 28 March to 15 October castle 9 am–6 pm, ticket centre 8 am–4 pm; 16 October to 27 March castle 10 am–4 pm, ticket centre 8 am–3:30 pm; closed 1 Jan and 24, 25, 31 Dec. Museums such as the Lenbachhaus and the Pinakothek der Moderne were open on 1 January 2026, but nothing has been published for 2027.

Germany, in brief
What now
If this sounds like your trip, start here.

Munich
→The Bavarian capital, behaving as if the rest of Germany were abroad

Munich in 2 days
→The market on Saturday, the galleries on Sunday, a Monday without the Pinakotheken: two days in Munich ordered by the calendar, not the map.

Day trips from Munich
→Five trips out of Munich all leave from the main station, and the length of the ride decides how much of the day is left when you arrive.
