Where the free New Year's Eve party is held in Barcelona, when to arrive, how the metro gets you home and what is open on 1 January. Plus the grapes, the alternatives and where to sleep.
Plaça de Catalunya takes the credit for New Year's Eve in Barcelona, but the official party has been held on Montjuïc for years, and it is free. That is where to go for the programme: fireworks, drones and music beneath the Palau Nacional. For an NYE without a packed avenue, go the other way, towards Poble Espanyol or a quiet viewpoint. The rest of this page is a plan for New Year in Barcelona either way, from the afternoon of 31 December to the morning after.
Where the main party is
The city council puts on the big event on Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina, the wide avenue that runs beneath the Palau Nacional towards the Font Màgica de Montjuïc and Plaça d'Espanya. Entry costs nothing, yet the crowd is capped rather than endless. In 2025 the programme ran for this long: 2025: 11:50 pm–12:15 am. It was a mix of Barcelona fireworks, drones and music by Marc Parrot, produced by Groupe F and split into four parts by element: air, water, earth and fire.
The Font Màgica came back that year after years of closures during the drought. In 2024 the same avenue hosted a show with 550 drones. Locals call the night Nochevieja in Spanish and Cap d'Any in Catalan, and both names appear on the posters. The 2026/27 programme has not been announced, so treat the place and the timings above as the 2025 edition and expect the official details to appear late in the year.
- Capacity is limited, and the Guàrdia Urbana controls access.
- Metal detectors are used at the entrance, and glass bottles and knives are not allowed in.
- Arrive early, in the evening a couple of hours before midnight. Sources disagree on the exact opening hour, so none is given here.
- The public area is the central roadway and the pavement towards the Besòs side.
- Traffic is disrupted, and in 2025 buses 13, 23, 150 and X3 were diverted from 19.00.
The nearest station is Espanya, on lines L1 and L3, and the same station is where the crowd heads once the show ends. If the queue looks heavy, walk to Hostafrancs or Rocafort on L1, or to Tarragona or Poble-sec on L3. Pick your way home before you arrive, not at midnight.
The twelve grapes
The custom is one grape for each of the twelve strokes of the clock at midnight, known in Catalan as the campanades and in Spanish as las campanadas. It sounds easier than it is, and the fruit has to be eaten at the pace of the bells, so most people buy and prepare the grapes in advance.
Barcelona residents gather in squares for it too, Plaça de Catalunya among them, but that crowd is informal and has no programme. For a show, Montjuïc is still the better answer.
Getting around that night
The metro does the heavy lifting. On the night in 2025 it ran without breaks: 2025: non-stop from 5:00 am on 31 Dec to midnight on 1 Jan. All 8 lines and 165 stations were open, with trains every four minutes or less on L1 and L3 between 21.00 and 2.00. In 2024 the metro set a record of 312,628 passengers that night. The tram also runs all night, and staff stood on the stations around Espanya to steer people. On an ordinary weekend the metro runs like this: Mon–Thu until midnight, Fri until 2:00, Saturday non-stop.
For the ride itself a T-casual of ten trips in zone 1 costs €13, and a T-dia for unlimited trips in a day costs €12. Buy the ticket before the evening.
If you want to skip the crowd
Poble Espanyol, the architectural village on Montjuïc, put on its own party in 2025 from 22.30 until around 6.00 on 1 January, with music. Clubs such as Razzmatazz, Shôko, Opium Mar and Pacha sell tickets in advance, and many restaurants offer set menus and flamenco dinners.
If the idea of a crowd is the problem, a quieter night is available: a walk through the Gothic Quarter, along the sea front or up to a Montjuïc viewpoint, and the cable car to Montjuïc is one way up. Verdict: the avenue for the show, Poble Espanyol if you want music and a roof, the walk if you want silence.
No official programme for 2026/27 exists yet. The 2025 place and times are a guide, and barcelona.cat/nadal is the page to read in December.
A ticket with a chosen time slot, booked ahead.
New Year's Day
The morning after is slow. Sagrada Família shortens its day: 1 Jan 9:00 am–2:00 pm. Book the ticket in advance, with or without the audio guide, and go early. Palau de la Música Catalana stages the New Year concert by the Orquestra Simfònica del Vallès, an evening of Strauss waltzes and polkas lasting about 70 minutes: 1 Jan 2027 at 9:00 pm (run 28 Dec – 9 Jan). Tickets cost €45–68, and a visit to the building itself can be added beforehand. The Cavalcada de Reis, the Three Kings parade, falls on 5 Jan, and there is more on it in the Christmas market story.
Official ticket
- Open 1 Jan
- 9:00 am–2:00 pm
Through a partner
- options with a guide or audio guide
- usually costs more than the official ticket
Where to stay
Eixample puts the metro on the doorstep, while Poble-sec and Sants sit within walking distance of the avenue, which means the walk home is short. The Gothic Quarter is the base for Plaça de Catalunya, with the metro for Montjuïc. Book a room early because the end of the year is a busy time in the city.

Choose the avenue on Montjuïc if the show is the point, and arrive early with a plan for the metro home. Choose Poble Espanyol or the walk if the crowd is what you are avoiding.
Check the same room on both sites: price and cancellation terms can differ.
