In brief

A plan for 31 December and 1 January in Dubrovnik: the concert on Stradun, the midnight fireworks of the last edition, when to arrive, what to do with children or away from the crowd, and what the holiday closes.

Winter is said to empty Dubrovnik and to leave NYE to Zagreb and Split. The city answers with an open-air concert on Stradun, the main street of the Old Town, built around the biggest names it can book. In 2025/26 that meant Dino Merlin, Hiljson Mandela and Jakov Jozinović, and for New Year in Dubrovnik this year only one act has been named, the band Plavi orkestar. The rest of the programme is still to be published, so what follows describes the last edition, in the past tense, and builds the night around it.

Where it happens

Stradun

The main public doček sits on Stradun, inside the festival that the city runs every winter. It was the Dubrovnik Winter Festival until 2025/26, and from this season it carries the name Advent u Gradu, as the mayor, Mato Franković, said in July 2026 when he announced Plavi orkestar. Silvestrovo, as Croatians call the night, is a street party here: music, a crowd and a countdown. The Old Town is a pedestrian zone, so you arrive on foot, most directly through the Pile Gate on its western side.

Midnight and the fireworks

Reports on the 2025/26 night describe traditional midnight fireworks over the Old Town. For this year none have been announced, and the article that named Plavi orkestar does not mention them either. Plan the evening so that the music is the reason to be on Stradun, and treat the sky show as a possible extra.

When to arrive

Programme and crowd share one rule here: whoever wants to see the stage gets to the street early. In 2025/26 the evening programme on Stradun started at 21:00 (2025 edition), and thousands of people filled the street. No ticket has been announced for the night, though free entry has not been stated outright either, and the tourist board page tzdubrovnik.hr will carry the full 2026/27 programme once the city publishes it. Arrive well before the start if a spot near the stage matters to you.

Getting around that night

Dubrovnik is easiest on this night if you do not need transport at all. The Old Town has no cars, while Lapad and Gruž are further from Stradun, which makes the return trip the part to plan. Libertas, the city bus operator, publishes its timetables at libertasdubrovnik.hr, and nothing announced so far mentions a special service for this night.

Alternatives to the crowd

  • A children's countdown on Stradun in the daytime, with Jacques Houdek, start: 11:00 (2025 edition). Dubrovnik bartenders also ran a cocktail party on the street at midday.
  • A concert on 1 January: the Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra played the New Year's Concert on Stradun, start: 11:00 (1 Jan 2026), with Ivan Josip Skender conducting, and Petar Grašo gave a concert there that evening.
  • The City Walls by day, calmer than the midnight crowd: the winter ticket is €15. Closed days: none (except Dec 25).
  • A gala dinner at a hotel or restaurant: places that run a Silvestrovo evening sell it with a ticket.

Customs

The tradition here is the street itself: people gather outdoors, there is music, and the whole of Stradun counts down to midnight together.

1 January

Expect a quiet day. 1 January is a public holiday in Croatia, and most shops and restaurants are usually closed. The festival runs on: 28 Nov 2026 – 3 Jan 2027. A guided walk through the Old Town fits the day, although whether tours run on the holiday is for each operator to say, and the City Walls stay open through winter. The Prince's Palace and the Sponza in winter: 9–18 (Apr–Oct); 9–16, closed Mon (Nov–Mar), but their hours on the holiday itself are not known, so check before you go.

Where to sleep

The Old Town is the closest base to Stradun, so a room inside it or by the Pile or Ploče gates means the walk home after midnight takes a few minutes, while Lapad or Gruž add a trip to it. Book early, because this is a night when people plan ahead. The page on districts compares where to stay.
