The Thames fireworks are a ticketed event, and the free spot on the riverbank that guidebooks promise does not exist. This plan covers tickets, the hills that work without one, the night's transport and 1 January.
Anyone planning New Year in London should drop the idea of turning up at Big Ben at eleven and finding a gap in the crowd. The riverside is fenced into zones, every zone needs a ticket from Ticketmaster, and the fireworks are set for 31 Dec 2026. NYE here is decided months ahead, so the order below starts with the tickets, moves to the free hills for anyone who missed them, and ends with the slow day after.
Tickets, areas, gates
The programme runs 8 pm to 12:30 am, and the viewing areas take people in during a narrower window: 8:00–10:30 pm. Tickets are sold only through Ticketmaster, up to four per purchase and with no refunds. Category A covers the Blue, Pink and White areas at €64.10, or €40.80 with a London postcode. Category B covers Red, Green and Orange at €46.60, or €23.30 with a London postcode. A final smaller batch is due later in the year. Each colour is its own fenced pocket, and you cannot walk from one to another during the night. The New Year's Eve fireworks in London are launched from barges on the river and from the London Eye, and the bongs of Big Ben mark midnight. Every person needs a ticket, children included, and anyone under 16 must come with an adult.
Your zone decides your gate and your station. Blue uses gate 1 or 2 and Victoria, Charing Cross or Embankment. Red uses gate 4 or 5 and Blackfriars, while Holborn has no access without steps. Pink uses gate 6 and Southwark, Green uses gate 7 and Waterloo, and White uses gate 8 and Waterloo too, although it cannot be reached from Westminster station. Orange is the accessible area, with seating, a hearing loop and a Changing Places toilet. It uses gate 9 and Waterloo. Westminster, Golden Jubilee, Lambeth, Blackfriars and Waterloo bridges cannot be used before or after the event, and traffic is restricted from 14:00 on 31 December until about 6:00 on 1 January. The bank you are on is the bank you stay on. The main ticket holder may be asked for photo ID that matches the booking.
Where people actually watch
Without a ticket the plan is height, not proximity. Time Out's guide published on 30 December 2025 pointed to Parliament Hill on Hampstead Heath, Hilly Fields in Brockley, Telegraph Hill in New Cross and Alexandra Palace. These are high grounds with a wide view over the skyline, and none of them gives you the London Eye up close. You see a city lighting up in pieces, which is a fair picture of midnight in London. Leave the Westminster side to ticket holders, since access there was limited last year for people without one. Hilly Fields and Telegraph Hill suit anyone sleeping in the south-east, and Parliament Hill suits the north. Bring a hat. If the weather turns, the BBC covers the fireworks and your sofa is the one zone that never sells out.
Primrose Hill is the free viewpoint every list repeats, and in 2025 it was closed to the public. Sources disagree about this year, so do not make it the only plan. Parliament Hill is the safer hill.
Getting there and home
There is no free public transport on New Year's Eve in London, and Transport for London has said so plainly. In 2025 the Tube ran all night apart from the Waterloo & City line and parts of the District line, and the DLR also ran through the night. TfL had not published the 2026/27 night timetable when this was written, so treat 2025 as the pattern. Embankment, Westminster, Waterloo and Charing Cross use entry and exit control, which can shut the nearest station when you need it. With the bridges closed, a taxi or hired car is a poor idea. Walk away from the river and tap in with a contactless card or an Oyster at a station that is not on the Thames.
Paid alternatives
The nearest thing to a free choice is a fireworks cruise. Last year they left from Embankment, Crown, Bankside, London Bridge and Tower Millennium piers and came back at roughly 1:15 to 1:45 am. The offers for this season had not been published when this was written. Rooftops are the other route. Time Out's list for 2025 included Sky Garden, The View from the Shard, Fire & Fromage on the Southbank, Alto by San Carlo at Selfridges, Boundary Rooftop, Kitty Hawk and Joia at Battersea Power Station. Hyde Park Winter Wonderland is open on 31 December but closes early, so it works for the evening and not for the countdown: 11:00–22:00, last entry 21:30.
A ticket with a chosen time slot, booked ahead.
Parade and a slow day
The one fixed event of the day is the New Year's Day Parade on 1 Jan 2027. It is free to watch, and the organisers' route runs from near Piccadilly Circus down Regent Street, through Trafalgar Square and along Whitehall to Westminster. A paid Fun Zone stands at Waterloo Place. The London Eye is shut for annual maintenance throughout January, so the wheel is not an option. Winter Wonderland reopens at 11 am. A slow breakfast, the parade, a walk to Westminster and then the Hyde Park lights make a full day, and it earns the late start.
Where to stay
Choose a base on a Tube line that reaches your viewing zone or your hill, and avoid anything that depends on the stations by the Thames. A room near Waterloo or Victoria makes the walk to a gate short and the walk home shorter.

Buy a ticket if you want to see the fireworks beside the London Eye, and book it the day sales open, because there is no other way into the zones. If you miss out, climb Parliament Hill, take a cruise or book a rooftop table.
Check the same room on both sites: price and cancellation terms can differ.
