In brief

A plan for New Year's Eve in Istanbul: where the countdown happens on the Bosphorus, what the Taksim crowd is like, how to get home afterwards and what is open on 1 January.

Istanbul has no single guaranteed citywide fireworks show, and a plan for NYE that waits for one ends up on the wrong pavement. The night splits between the Bosphorus shore and the crowds of Taksim, and the metro ran all night in 2024 and 2025, which makes the trip home the easy part of the evening. The programme for 2026/27 is not out yet, so everything below about the night itself comes from the last edition and is told in the past tense.

The main party

Ortaköy and the Bosphorus

Turks call the night yılbaşı, the start of the year, and in the 2025/26 edition the countdown belonged to the water. Ortaköy and Beşiktaş sit directly on the Bosphorus, so the sky is open and the mosque and the strait fill the frame, which is why the countdown gathers here. Nothing guaranteed a show, though. Fireworks came from boats, hotels, clubs and various points along the banks, so there was no one moment that the whole city watched together. The Asian side offers a different seat, since Üsküdar and the shore around it face the European skyline across the water. The municipality announces the new plans shortly before the night. What happened by the water last time: 2025: countdown and fireworks over the Bosphorus at Ortaköy and Beşiktaş; fireworks also at Kadıköy and Sarayburnu.

Taksim and İstiklal

The crowd, no confirmed fireworks

Taksim Square and İstiklal Caddesi, in Beyoğlu, are where Istanbul goes to be among people rather than to watch a sky. Nobody confirmed a fireworks display there, so the countdown is a street party with phones raised. A guide published in September 2026 says barriers, security checks, rerouted traffic and changed access to metro stations are possible this year, so plan an extra stretch on foot and a second station in mind. Nişantaşı was quieter in 2025 than in earlier years. How Taksim looked on the last night: 2025: crowds on Taksim and İstiklal Avenue from the evening to the countdown; heavy security.

Getting home

The metro ran all night

Home is easier than in most cities. What ran after midnight in 2025, and in 2024 as well: 2025: lines M1A, M1B, M2, M3, M4, M5, M6, M7, M8 and M9 ran all night. Trams and funiculars stopped earlier: 2025: until 2 am on 1 January. The metrobus ran without a break, and extra bus and metrobus departures were added, while the Şehir Hatları ferries add trips on demand on 31 December, though nothing is confirmed for the ferries in 2026. Taxis are hard to catch after midnight, so count on a long wait for one. A tram ride costs: €0.82.

If you want to skip the crowd: a cruise or dinner

  • A New Year's Eve dinner cruise on the Bosphorus leaves from Kabataş and includes a meal, a programme, a toast at midnight and fireworks seen from the deck. Gray Line and byFood both sell one, and listings mix 2026 and 2027, so read the date before paying.
  • A gala dinner at a hotel or restaurant comes with a fixed menu, a minimum spend and often a deposit. Book early, since the good tables go first.
  • Kadıköy, on the Asian side, drew a crowd to the Çarşı and İskele square in 2025, with a light show of phone torches at midnight.

At home the evening is a family dinner. Turkey, hindi, sits at the centre of the table, and a round of tombala, a bingo-style game, follows while the Milli Piyango lottery draw runs on television. Some families bake chestnuts, smash a pomegranate on the floor or leave salt on the doorstep, and the rest of the city goes out.

New Year's Day

1 January 2027 is a Friday and a public holiday. On the last holiday, Istanbul's municipal public transport was free: 2026: free on 1 January (IBB transport; Marmaray, Başkentray, İZBAN and Sirkeci–Kazlıçeşme free by presidential decision; personalised İstanbulkart for 24 h). Hagia Sophia has its own Friday gap: €25. Topkapı Palace and the Harem keep a weekly closure: €49. Bazaar hours vary from shop to shop, so the holiday suits a long breakfast and a walk better than a shopping list. Ticketed sights such as Hagia Sophia, Topkapı, the Basilica Cistern and Galata Tower are easier to enjoy from 2 January, and a food tour in Eminönü or Kadıköy fits that day too. A daytime Bosphorus ferry cruise with Şehir Hatları is the gentle option for the holiday itself: €11. Expect cold, damp wind and the chance of snow. Mosques stop tourist entry during prayers, and shoulders and knees need covering. Services at Saint Anthony of Padua on İstiklal and at the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Fener are confirmed with the churches directly.
