Porto's main New Year's Eve party was held on Avenida dos Aliados in the edition of 31 December 2025, with a multimedia show and fireworks at midnight. Here are the hours, the closures and the way home.
Ask most people where Porto greets the new year and they point to the Ribeira, the river and the iron bridge. The official programme for NYE in the 2025/26 edition pointed somewhere else: the Avenida dos Aliados, in front of the town hall, with a stage, a show and fireworks at midnight. The avenue closes to cars, the metro station underneath it closes too, and the only way in is on foot. Anyone planning New Year in Porto should arrive by Trindade or São Bento, and anyone who wants no crowd at all is better off at a dinner by the river.
The Porto fireworks
Câmara Municipal do Porto, the town hall at the top of the avenue, organised the edition of 31 Dec 2025, and the stage stood right in front of it. The programme began with a concert by the band Clã at 10 pm. At midnight came a multimedia show with music and the fireworks, designed by the studio Grandpa's Studio. Nininho Vaz Maia took the stage at 12:30 am, and a DJ set by Beatbombers carried the night to 2 am. Portuguese listings call the night Passagem de Ano, the passage of the year. The programme for 31 December 2026 had not been published when this was written, so every hour here belongs to the last edition.
When to arrive and what closes
- The avenue was closed to cars from 7 pm to 7 am.
- Pedestrian movement around the town hall was limited from 9:30 pm to 1 am.
- Aliados metro station was closed from 7 pm to 5 am, with Trindade and São Bento as the alternatives.
- The concert zone was reached on foot through six access points, each with a security check.
- STCP buses ran from 7 pm to 7 am on changed routes.
Go to Aliados without a car, through Trindade or São Bento, and plan to be inside the restricted area before the pedestrian limits begin. If the crowd is the problem, book a dinner by the river and treat midnight as a toast, not a destination.
Getting around that night
Public transport was the city's own advice for the evening, and it had a night to match. The metro ran without a break until 6 am, apart from the purple line E, whose last trips left around 1 am. STCP reinforced eleven night routes, running from 9:30 pm to 2:30 am, and the eight M night routes were reinforced until 5:30 am. On the day itself, fares are the usual ones: a single Z2 ride cost €1.40, and the Andante card itself €0.60. Trindade and São Bento both sit a short walk from the avenue, which makes them the sensible places to get off before midnight and to board afterwards, when the crowd thins around them.
The river and the far bank
The river is the place for dinner rather than for the party. The Réveillon da Alfândega at the old customs house in the Ribeira served dinner with music and a view of the Douro, and the hotels on the Ribeira and in Gaia held gala dinners with live music. Across the Ponte Dom Luís I lies Vila Nova de Gaia, the far bank, which suits a quieter evening. The viewpoints at Miradouro da Vitória, Jardim do Morro and the Mosteiro da Serra do Pilar all look over the Douro and are good for a short walk before dinner.
Twelve grapes at midnight
Many Portuguese eat twelve grapes at midnight, one for each chime and each with a wish. Glasses go up with a toast of À Nossa!, and many people wear blue underwear for luck. Some break a plate or two, and the most committed head to the Atlantic for a swim on the first morning of the year. None of it needs a ticket, and all of it works at a restaurant table as well as on the avenue.
A New Year's Eve dinner and a Douro cruise
A New Year's Eve dinner in Porto, with a special menu in the centre, was listed for the 2025/26 edition on the GetYourGuide page for New Year activities in the city, and the same page offers a Douro cruise on a private yacht with sparkling wine, for up to ten people. That cruise listing makes no promise of fireworks. For anyone who wants the evening arranged in advance, the dinner is the easier fit, and the cruise fits an afternoon on the river around the holiday.
New Year's Day
The first of January is a public holiday. The metro starts again at 6 am on the holiday timetable, and the whole STCP network runs on the Sunday and holiday schedule. The historic trams on lines 1 and 8 run as usual. The Livraria Lello is closed on 1 January, so the famous bookshop belongs to another day: 1 Jan, Easter Sunday, 1 May, 24 Jun and 25 Dec. A walk along the Douro from the Ribeira and over the bridge to Gaia is a gentler plan for the morning after.
Where to sleep
The centre is a walk from Aliados, and the Ribeira sits right on the river, close to the dinners. Bonfim is a calmer district for anyone who wants to sleep soon after the show.
Check the same room on both sites: price and cancellation terms can differ.
