How to spend 31 December in Gdańsk when the old town has no official programme: where people gather at midnight, where the concerts were, and the way home.
New Year in Gdańsk happens without a stage in the middle of town. The city sets up no official event in the centre, yet a crowd turns up anyway, and the concerts the city did organise in the 2025/26 edition were held away from the old town. Poles call the night Sylwester, and for visitors the choice comes down to this: watch midnight among strangers in the street, or go to a concert by the sea.
Where the night happens
The meeting point is Długi Targ and Długa Street, the Long Market and the Long Street, where nobody organises anything and a lot of people show up at midnight. Private fireworks are likely, so midnight here is a crowd with no stage and no organiser. The official concerts were these: Brzeźno pier at 10:00 pm, Wilanowski Jar at 10:50 pm (2025/26 edition). Novika and Mr. Lex played the first, and Natalia Kukulska the second. Those names belong to that season and say nothing about the next.
- Długi Targ and Długa Street: the spontaneous crowd, no organiser.
- The pier at Brzeźno: a concert in 2025/26, with the sea wind included.
- Wilanowski Jar: a concert in 2025/26, the second venue.
The 2026/27 programme has not been announced. Sylwester listings are kept on gdansk.pl and at trojmiasto.pl/sylwester-w-gdansku.
Getting home at night
In 2025/26 the city ran special buses and trams towards the concert venues, and the night service was tram N0 every 20 minutes from 11 pm to 4 am (2025/26 edition). Night buses were also listed at the venues every 30 minutes. The timetable for 2026/27 has not been published. The old town itself is pedestrian, and anyone sleeping in it walks home without waiting for anything.
Dinner instead of a stage
For a night without a crowd, the 2025 listings pointed to Montownia, Hard Rock Cafe and Stacja Food Hall. Entry was free, and reserved tables were paid for on top. The trade is simple: you give up the street at midnight and get a chair.
1 January
Poland treats 1 January as a public holiday, and shops are mostly closed. The European Solidarity Centre is shut as well, on 24–26 December, 1 January and 6 January. Plan the day around a long walk along the Motława, a late breakfast and nothing that needs a till.
Where to stay
Sleep in the Main Town (Główne Miasto) and the walk home after midnight needs no tram. Book the room early.

To see the city at midnight, stand on Długi Targ with everyone else. For a stage and music, the 2025/26 pattern pointed to the sea at Brzeźno or to Wilanowski Jar, and the old town gave neither.
Check the same room on both sites: price and cancellation terms can differ.

Where to stay in Gdańsk
→The Main Town puts everything within reach, Wrzeszcz keeps the same ride for less money, and Sopot trades the address for a beach on the doorstep.

What Gdańsk costs
→The biggest item is the bed, the biggest decision is Gdańsk or Sopot — everything else is a few euros a day.

Gdańsk behind the façades: the crane, the tower, the fortress and the district the guides skip
→A crane that once hauled masts, a tower that shows how small the Main Town really is, a fortress at the river mouth and a district tourists rarely reach.

What to eat in Gdańsk
→Gdańsk eats the Polish menu with a speciality of its own in a glass — a liqueur with real gold flakes in it, as old as the port itself.

The best time to visit Gdańsk
→In Gdańsk the date changes the sea temperature as much as the air — and three weeks in late summer turn the city into one long fair.

Getting around Gdańsk

→Five mistakes that cost time or a ticket in Gdańsk, and what to do instead.

Beaches in Gdańsk
→Brzeźno is a tram and a pier, Jelitkowo is wide sand and a park, Stogi is pine and dunes, with no tram until mid-2027 — and Sopot and Gdynia are already a different stop.
