Where to be on 31 December in Dresden: the Elbe banks for midnight, the markets that stay open that night, and a plan for 1 January.
New Year in Dresden has no confirmed big stage this year, and that is less of a problem than it sounds. Two Christmas markets keep trading through the turn of the year, and midnight is traditionally watched along the river. Silvester here is a night spent walking, with the Elbe as the destination.
Where to watch midnight
People usually gather around the Frauenkirche and on the Brühlsche Terrasse, and the Dresden fireworks are usually watched from the bridges, among them the Marienbrücke, the Albertbrücke and the Loschwitzer Brücke, better known as the Blaues Wunder. The Königsufer and the Elbwiesen are the other classic spots, with the Altstadt skyline across the water. Read that "usually" literally: it describes where Dresden tends to go, and it makes no promise about 2026.
The city has not published a programme for 2026/27. Midnight in Dresden is mostly watched from the riverbank, and the stage plays a minor part.
Markets open on New Year's Eve
Two markets carry on past Christmas. One is the Augustusmarkt in Neustadt, on Hauptstraße running from the Golden Rider (Goldener Reiter). Its Silvesternacht hours: until 2 am; closed 1 Jan 2027. The market runs 25 Nov 2026 – 3 Jan 2027. The Advent auf dem Neumarkt by the Frauenkirche also continues after Christmas: 25 Nov – 23 Dec 2026 (and 27 Dec – 3 Jan 2027). The Hüttenzauber runs on too: 13 Nov 2026 – 2 Jan 2027.
If you want to skip the crowd
- The Elbwiesen and the Königsufer: open riverbank, room to stand, the same skyline without the bridge crowd.
- Neustadt: cafés and clubs, which is where the night goes on after midnight.
- A dinner or a boat on the Elbe: only if an organiser announces one for 2026, as no offer is listed yet.
New Year's Day
Neujahr is a slow day, and a good one for climbing the dome of the Frauenkirche, which costs €12 and closes at 4 pm from November to February, so the morning is the time. The Augustusmarkt is closed on 1 January, and the Neumarkt reopens on 2 January.
Official ticket
- Dome
- €12
- Closes
- 4 pm, Nov–Feb
Through a partner
- options with a guide or audio guide
- usually costs more than the official ticket
Getting around that night
The Altstadt is small enough to cross on foot, so the walk from the Neumarkt to the Brühlsche Terrasse and on to the river takes no ticket at all. Trams belong to DVB, and dvb.de is the operator's own site. A day ticket for the whole network costs €21.40.
Where to stay
Stay in the Altstadt around the Frauenkirche and the Neumarkt if midnight is the point, because the river is a short walk away. Neustadt suits those who want the night to continue in a bar. Book early either way.

Watch midnight by the Elbe, not on a market lane, and use the Augustusmarkt or the Neumarkt as a warm break before or after. Dresden rewards the person who walks.
Check the same room on both sites: price and cancellation terms can differ.
