New Year's Eve in Athens centres on Syntagma Square, with a free programme and silent fireworks, while the metro stops before the clock does. This page covers the evening, the ride home and the quiet first of January.
Athens does not spend NYE crammed into one square, because dinner at home comes first, the streets feel almost empty around 10pm, and the real party in bars and bouzouki clubs rarely starts before 1am. Syntagma is the exception for anyone who wants a countdown, and it comes with a catch: public transport winds down well before midnight.
Syntagma Square
Greeks call the day Protochronia and the eve paramoní Protochroniás, and the city hall publishes the programme for New Year in Athens only shortly before the night. Nothing is announced yet for 2026/27, so the last edition, 2025/26, is the closest outline of what to expect. Entry to the square in front of Parliament was free, with no ticket.
Mayor Haris Doukas led the countdown on stage with the performers, while Kostas Maraveyas and Rena Morfi shaped the programme around him and the Athens fireworks stayed silent, a rule introduced in 2024 to spare animals. It drew the face of the singer Dionysis Savopoulos in the sky, to two of his songs, and the party carried on after midnight. Programme: 2025: from 10pm, opened by the Athens Municipality Philharmonic. At midnight: 2025: silent fireworks and a drone show at midnight.
Choose Syntagma if you want the countdown, the music and the drone show, and fix your way home before you leave the hotel. If the evening matters more than the square, watch from a neighbourhood close to where you sleep, or use one of the free options below.
The metro stops before midnight
This is the part of the 2025 edition that surprises people, because trains and buses stopped long before the crowd went home and the walk back became the real cost of a night on Syntagma. The metro, by the 2025 timetable: 2025: line 1 from the terminals 10:20pm; lines 2 and 3 from Syntagma 11:03pm. Trams: 2025: between 9:30pm and 10:45pm, depending on the line. Buses: 2025: from 10pm, all back at depots by 11pm. After that only your feet and a taxi are left.
Buy your fare before you walk to the square, because a 90-minute ticket costs €1.20 and a 24-hour pass €4.10. Then decide at which hour you leave. Anyone who stays for the drone show leaves on foot, so a hotel within walking distance of Syntagma, Plaka or Monastiraki settles the question.
Three other free places held a midnight programme in 2025, and each is easier to leave than the main square.
- Pedion tou Areos, the park north of the centre: 2025: concert by Eleni Foureira and ZAF, DJ Bobito before and after midnight
- Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) in Faliron: 2025: midnight fireworks over Faliron, ice rink and park open until 2am
- Tritsis Park in western Athens, where Klavdia sang about an hour before midnight and Playmen played until dawn, and Piraeus Tower, lit up with fireworks and signal rockets
Check the same room on both sites: price and cancellation terms can differ.
If the square is too much: dinner with a view
Greek families sit down to dinner late on the last night of the year, and restaurants fill up, so a table needs a reservation. If the square sounds like too much, a set dinner with a view of the Acropolis replaces it with a plate and a window. Several hotels sold exactly that in 2025, among them the Titania with its Olive Garden terrace and the Grand Hyatt with its Grand Rooftop. Book directly with the hotel, and ask what the menu and the music include before you pay.
At home the night is built from small rituals. A vasilopita is cut with a coin hidden inside for Saint Basil, Agios Vasilis, and whoever finds the coin is lucky. A pomegranate is smashed on the doorstep at midnight, the more seeds the more luck. The first visitor through the door, the podariko, is supposed to bring luck, and children with triangles sing the kalanda at doors. Gifts come from Saint Basil on New Year, not at Christmas, and the first card game of the year is read as an omen for money, mostly as a joke.
New Year's Day
The first of January is a public holiday, and most shops, museums and sites are closed. Acropolis: none (except holidays: Jan 1, Mar 25, May 1, Easter Sunday, Dec 25 and 26). Acropolis Museum: none (except holidays: Jan 1, Easter, May 1, Dec 25–26). National Archaeological Museum: none (except holidays). The museum by the Acropolis keeps shorter hours on the 31st: 9am–3pm. Buses and trolleybuses: 2026: Sunday and public-holiday timetable.
Spend the day on foot instead, through the National Garden and then along the pedestrian streets of Ermou and Dionysiou Areopagitou, where the city is as quiet as it gets. Keep the Acropolis for the second, with a timed ticket at €30 and the Acropolis Museum afterwards, or the National Archaeological Museum if you prefer. A food tour or a day trip to Delphi or Sounion fills the third.
A ticket with a chosen time slot, booked ahead.
An organised visit with a guide.
A food tour with a local guide: several tastings in one walk.
